Create your own band and first CD cover, the Facebook way! This is how to come up with your own:
1 - Go to "Wikipedia." Hit “Random Article”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to "Random quotations"
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use Photoshop or similar to put it all together

5 - Post it to FB with this text in the "caption" and TAG the friends you want to join in. (you can untag yourself if you don't want this photo up)

shucks shucks shucks. Missed my alarms this morning. After the intensity of the past two days' practice, I'm particularly sad to miss sharing in the Ashtanga Yoga Center, Washington DC's community energy. Looks like it'll be Virginia Lung's style of double-header: Crossfit this AM, then a morning primary in my studio at Balance Gym (didja know that they got space heaters for the yogis?).

When tempted to skip a pose today in my practice, I thought of what Peggy shared: "The ashtanga yoga system should never be confused with "power yoga" or any whimsical creation which goes against the tradition of the many types of yoga scriptures. It would be a shame to lose the precious jewel of liberation in the mud of ignorant body building." -- Mr. Jois

I didn't skip.

It's 85 here in Mysore. Seeing the driver holding a sign with my name on it was enough to make me want to cry, but the dangerousness of the car ride into town was enough to make me smile big. My first conference was fascinating. I got to view Sharath, the (these are my terms) titleholder of the Ashtanga lineage, through the lens of a man who deals with keeping the purity of a practice in the real world-- the world of parties, internet gossip, and multiculturalism. A fascinating, non-textbook experience. A highlight, paraphrased: "A man with two gurus (gu ru: dispel dark) is like a man with two doctors-- take both pieces of advice/take both pills, and you surely are worse for it."

This is my teachers' teacher, Pattabhi Jois.

This week marks the seventh year of his passing. He died before I began learning his method.

I wasn't sure what to say to honor him, as he touched so many people directly, and yet for me, indirectly.

I didn't want to appropriate, and yet I am so inspired by his work.

When I saw this image, I knew what it was I wanted to say.

When I die, I hope it is my good humor that is remembered-- just like yours. Thanks, KPJ. I owe you one.

Today, a student came to me to borrow goggles to practice in. Not so long ago, I learned how to do just that.

Last night, I couldn't sleep... I was wrestling with black lives mattering, brown lives mattering, pink lives mattering, white lives mattering...how to find parity between that and the fact that I believe that no one exists on purpose and life itself is a consequence of action (and so, it's only meaning is that it is an effect).

Everything comes down to charachter, and the world is full of valorless men and woman who wear all kinds of uniforms and masks.

It is also full of people who do the right thing, even though no one is keeping score.

This is why yoga will never be mainstream.

Engaging in materialistic or sensual pleasure with little focus on higher purpose is not yoga-- it's called bhoga. Bhoga, left unchecked, can lead to pain in the body or/and mind-- and this is called roga.

On the flip side, Roga and Bhoga can both lead back to yoga. Once you make a commitment to not harming or deceiving by paying attention to what is, the pain and discomfort can lead you right back out of the yick and into something better: reality.

For yoga to arise, attention to reality must be fixed and firm... Even when it becomes unpleasant. Even when it is inconvenient. Only then can we see what's under the hood.

Yoga will never be mainstream, but nowadays is a great time for alchemy. For transmutation. Turn this time of grasping and grabbing and pain into abiding love and bliss, by doing the inconvenient and uncomfortable.

When the tide comes in, all boats are lifted. "Other" is only illusion. The side effects of yoga are worth the effort: abiding joy, made of honesty and love. This does not mean "free of pain" but it does mean "free of suffering."

I've been abroad for the most recent conversations regarding the changing landscape of yoga in DC. We're seeing an unbelievable rise in yoga chains in DC-- Yoga District, Yoga Works, Down Dog, The Georgetown Yoga/Shaw/Dupont Conglomo, Yoga Heights, and Corepower. What does it mean for those who are highly trained and highly skilled to have chains expanding? What does it mean for those who want access to a contemplative practices and philosophy sets that goes back a few thousand years? What does it mean for those who don't know any of that and teach fitness with curated playlists under a homophone? Meg is interested in ensuring that modern postural yoga doesn't go the way of Lombrusco.

“…I must confess that I am not afraid of the word “tension.” …there is a type of constructive nonviolent tension that is necessary for growth. Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, we must see the need of having nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men to rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood. So, the purpose of direct action is to create a situation so crisis-packed that it will inevitably open the door to negotiation"

AS MLK WROTE IN HIS Birmingham letters, Rattling the establishment is very useful. Its true, you might find yourself a pariah, but to an unrepresented community of people, you are representation, giving voice to those that have been largely voiceless. It requires valor and bravery, as MLK later came to discover, as standing your ground may in fact become the hill that you die upon.

Much like my affinity for drag, I recognize that yoga will never truly be mainstream because it "mocks ego," as RuPaul says. Yoga is very good for marginalized people. It's goodness for the voices unspoken is directly proportionate to its threat to the establishment.

The establishment, the Man, is invested in maintaining its power, and because that power comes from a deified ego, the establishment further marginalizes those that dare question ego.

Anything that mocks ego becomes an inherent threat.

Those vested in the power that comes from the establishment, and for this I say as clearly as I can: especially ONLY from the establishment-- those people will always attempt to (at best) diminish and (at worst) silence (by any means necessary) that which shows that the emporer has no clothes. They will do it with a clear conscience as only those who have made a god out of a toothless tiger can murder guiltlessly.

The very best way to rattle the ego starts by creating tension. Without discounting your inherent value, question your worth. You can't use your privileges for good if you don't admit you have them. We all have god given rights and innate gifts. What are your gifts? Where have you struggled? You can't recognize your growth potential without a sober assesment of where you are. This will help build empathy.

Then, go out and get loud.
Rattle the establishment.
Do yoga.
Fight AIDS.

Make MLK, RuPaul, and this little yogi proud and go out there and color with all the colors in the crayon box.

The age of the performer and the vibe of the older gal collecting the money gave me the heeby-jeebies. She was young and the lady was very gruff... Do. Not. Like. And I love throwing money at drag queens, strippers, and circus performers-- yikes!😳

I try not to doubt the power of the universe to give stage direction, and this was just one more chance to see it in action. There is magic everywhere (especially NoLa and Goa) I think yoga helps us listen and hear for the cues, and our seniors can either really help us with that-- to see and feel the magic... 🎩
... Or they can stiffle and silence and take advantage -- something akin to labor violations. Allowing for beauty and growth and magic doesn't mean not seeing the ugly, the oppression, and the macabre.
✊🏻
Yoga's not all rainbows and kittens.

How do we tether a soul to another? What twine or taffy makes them stay? Is it love or god or byproduct of inevitability?

Perhaps there is no real delineation-- all three the same, differently labeled, but effectively borderless. So then too, this is a reflection on both marriage and friendship, both of which can bind so equally and tightly. It seems to me there is no distinction -- both a pact with another to participate in the process of complete cooperation with the inevitable. Sounds an awful lot like enlightenment.

The great sages of the yogic path say that the surest way to the end states of yoga are through love and devotion. They call that path to enlightenment bhakti.

There is no surer way to know God and the self than love.

Till death do we part, indeed.

My dear friend Jen is an exquisite and accessable teacher. Shes having a 20% off sale for her online ashtanga trainings to help pay her dog's mounting vet bills. You should buy the videos because they're ridiculously good, but you should do it now because every penny from the 20% off sale goes right to her vet.

This is one of my absolute all time favorite sequences to practice and to share. For those accustomed to vinyasa flow, you’ll get all the highlights. For those loving power yoga, you’ll get tons of floating opportunities. For those interested in a more gentle approach— the sequence is highly adaptable and approachable.

Two years ago I had an inkling of Jois’s abuses of power. I also had plausibility in my internal denial. I think Nigel has so eloquently stated so much of how i feel. I was reminded this morning by my statement of gratitude for Jois’s work from those two years ago— I am no less grateful for his vast accomplishment but also no longer interested in a purposeful naivety. Have nuance here— and leave space for others to do so also. And in the interim, please stop diefying, explicitly or implicitly, a flawed, complicated human. If you have real interest in helping others heal their traumas, take down your icons and your alters to an abuser.

You either get bitter or
you get better. It's that simple.
You either take what has been dealt

you down. The choice does not

being flippant and insubstantial. Whereas Asians are
perceived as the workhorse, never the show horse, the
gaysian can be both. When I was just Asian I was invisible.
But when I was both proudly gay and Asian, I compelled
them to never ignore me."
Apparently this resonated with some people :

My colleague,, sometimes student, sometimes
teacher, and always dearest friend, Michael Joel Hall
is so imbued with the process of Ashtanga yoga and
his times in India with his mentors at Mysore and Goa,
1 am in full support, total respect, and a little awe of
his his dedication to his practice. As I slowly inch
toward the first rung on the Iyengar yoga teaching
ladder, I find that Michael and I continue to have so
much to share with each other from our different but
often converging paths. Yesterday, a simple car-share
meet up devolved in to a convo and mini session on
the benfits ofnpowerful seated twistings to correct
imbalances in the pelvis and ribs. Honestly, what
someone is in to, as long as he or she is in to it
sincerely, whole-heartedly, and walking the talk of the
chosen discipline, whatever it is, DO IT. And while I
tease Michael a bit about putting all his verbs in
present participle and dropping pronouns like his
teacher Shararth (there is no Michael, there is only
Zool:), as an adhimatra (intense) practitioner myself, !
get it. You can check out his Mysore program at Kali
yoga in Columbia Heights and be on the look out for
some joined forces workshops we are cooking up
between us. Respect, camaraderie, friendship, and
most importantly, the work--let's do it.

After picking up a pre-order at Wal-Mart (the service, BTW,
is amazing!), I waited for the bus on a dingy block sporting a
brass-and-glass furniture mart, wig shop, and ubiquitous
liquor store. Nice weather, so lots of guys hanging out on the
corner smoking, talking. Moms hustling kids along the
crosswalk at a light that's too short—"Vamos! Vamos!" An
elderly neighbor spotted me from across the street, waving
his arms and shouting "Hi!" Another neighbor, who is
mentally disabled, picked up and smoked a cigarette butt off
the sidewalk, saw me, said "Heeeyyy" then excitedly told me
all about his trip to Cleveland. And there I was, with my light
complexion and Anthro dress, fitting right in with the fabric
of America.
It's just as easy to strike up a conversation with a person who
looks/dresses/acts nothing like you as it is to hide behind a
screen and rant racist asshole venom. Choose the former.

I'm thankful for my teachers in all of their forms for
awakening me to the insight of the happiness of pure Being.
A place without the poison of conditioned existence, the
poisons of prejudice and hate. I'm thankful for my teachers,
who provided the antidote (like a jungle physician). That
antidote: be yourself. No hate. No prejudice. Just joy. Just
love. Vande Gurunam.

a combination of nostalgia & missing him. Nostalgia
because it was so natural to climb on my mat and know he

Missing him because I haven't found a new teacher-

teachers in my journey. @betsypoos first handstand,

karmaastrology The Moon is currently in the asterism
known Ashlesha, or "The Entwiner." It will be here until it
enters Leo around 10:45 am NY time. Ashlesha gives off a
serpentine energy which brings us closer to our deep
reptilian nature. Therefore, tonight is a time to act
methodically and be wary of the desire to inflict venom into
our adversaries. This is a great time to practice yoga or
other energy sciences.

Fun fact: a *lot* of yoga teachers are on Medicaid due to the nature of their employment opportunities. Seriously: Some of your favorite teachers at your FAVORITE yoga studios.

So as not to publicly shame the studios with teachers on Medicare, I’ve redacted the studio names. But:

For a 1 hour class: a teacher with ~5 years experience receives between $35-$55 a class— this entails an hour long commute, two hours of class prep minimum, and the class itself. $8.75-$13.75 an hour.

For a teacher with 20 years experience? $55-$85 — that’s $13.75-21.25 an hour, with a maximum class cap per day of 4 (very, very high due to a maximum earning potential based on ability to commute and score gigs).

Are these livable wages? Discuss.

As some of you know, I'm headed to the cloud forest of Ecuador, outside of Quito. If you were ask me why, I'd tell you to "plant some trees. "

The trees and the planet are trending right now, aren't they? Maybe because the whole world is burning and things are about to get really fucked. Thats likely. But, thats not why I'm headed down there.

Yes, I'll tell you I'm going to Ecuador to plant some trees... but the truth is, I'm going down to do whatever the hell it is Kristen is doing.

For a good long time now, I've been in the business of earnestly learning from her. It's been a good choice on my end to value her knowledge... I truly don't know what I'd be if I hadn't made that choice long ago.

You can get in on this, too.

Here's the deal: you don't have to go plant trees-- for $18 a month, you'll help Kristen plant a lot of trees. And you'll get some yoga videos. Good karma stuff all around. She called the Pateron level "Karma Yogi" for a reason, and it makes me smile.

On top of the good vibes and some chocolate, you'll also get some yoga and recipe videos. Like this one. I teach ashtavakrasana very similarly to KK-- it would make sense, of course. She taught me how to teach it.

Go sign up. Get some yoga videos. Save the planet.

Tell people you're saving the planet. You're helping. And you will be.

Or don't tell anyone and just do it for yoga videos... your money will still fund the trees.

Or, be like me, and donate and tell everyone and still try and get some clout and maybe you'll never watch the videos but you'll at least in some small way be able to give back and you're gonna do it because it honors your teachers.

https://www.yogajournal.com/practice/a-sequence-for-political-resilience

About ten years ago, i set a goal for myself to be on the cover of yoga journal. Today, i made it to the homepage.

10 years in, I think that's about right. Time and dreams change. Markers of success evolve.

Back then, I imagined that my perfect form and smiling face would make a valuable representation -- and mark an internal validation.

As practice is wont to, I eventually had a realization: I could do better. I wanted to share something more substantive than just form. The marker for validation had shifted dramticay.

I wanted to share some part of what practice had shared with me-- something that has helped me grow and thrive and that I have seen do the same for others time and time again.

Well, here we are. I talk about resilience. I share a modified primary series. I tried to use explicit language so as to maximize value and minimize confusion. .

I'm honored and thrilled. Simply in existing, it represents those who might feel marginalized.

I'm out, I'm queer, and I'm big. I'm a yoga practitioner who shares a powerful and potent practice steeped in tradition and that has a veracious efficacy.

I hope you find it useful, for yourself or for others

They have so many different forms and varied affectations— different elaborations, steps, and varied repetitions — I love them.

I am often *taken* by them, and occasionally my attention is so captivated it makes me want to try it. This medicated ghee speaks to me, and shows me the value of Annette’s practice in so many different arenas of life. Makes me want to participate.

Mister Gates done been told us, y’all.

His footnote on how preparedness also helps create a more “just” society while also keeping the economy ~3 trillion dollars stronger maybe is more than a footnote.

I have made a pivot towards online offerings— but the question becomes more existential. As someone who functions as a manual therapist *and* a facilitator/ of an indigenous practice that changes the mind and body radically... is my vocation dispensable? My life’s work?

Surely not— but we do need protecting.

And we done been known.

Are you feeling stressed? Hungry for no reason? Irritable?

How about overly sleepy? Lethargic? A feeling of general malaise?

You might need to relax your system-- and I'm not talking in a shmaltzy bubble-bath-y way (please note: I love a bubble bath).

If you're nervous system is all high-strung right now, it might be so high that you can't even tell except for some of the above... you're just kind of in a bad mood. Sound familiar?

If you've had trouble getting back to a feeling of being centered, I recommend putting a tool in your toolkit that ca help.

Here's a strong technique that works.

What does it mean to go to a place like Ecuador in order to create and participate in economy? And how does one do that in a respectable, regenerative, respectful way?

Ask Kristen.

She and her partner Juan are growing cacao and heirloom cacao in a regenerative food forest with zero waste.

The optics in this post hit close to home.

I try not to dress up in a costume for the purposes of selling you the product of yoga. I can’t actually sell yoga yoga— and sell you my time.

My time as a practitioner, a seeker, a student, and a finder. And as a yoga facilitator/teacher/guide, it’s why you don’t see me in my dhoti very often... And why i tend to only wear my mala when I meditate.

There are so many ways to signal your desire to be seen as aspirational— biceps and bindis and baba harem pants. Andean throws. The thing is, when you have something valuable to share, you want to share it.

When you have devoted your life to something, you hope that you can make enough money to keep devoting your life to it. And, you might even try to sell the image of the thing using appropriators prints.

It’s a tricky thing... this authenticity piece. I love that Kristen and Juan encourages folks to make of all of it what you will.

In the mean time... should I teach you to handstand, shirtless?

Hi team! It's your friendly neighborhood yoga coach! Balance gym is at it again— matching donations and elevating queer POC’s voices.

One of the seminal yoga texts, the Bhagavad Gita, has the story of a Arjuna, a young Archer, going to war to fight injustices (against his cousins, no less). He grapples with the concepts of pacifism, patience, and change-- aren't Yogi's suppose to be peaceful??

“Inaction is action,” Krishna tells him. He shows up as his chariot driver, guiding him to find a right action In his confusion and concern. Krishna doesn’t want anyone to get hurt! Especially not his cousins... but as Krishna reminds him, sometimes it is a greater injustice to nor Fight for peace.

If you are a practitioner looking for a way to help stop injustice, and your money goes further than your arrows, please consider doing the yogic thing and donating.

Balance gym will match your donations!

Practicing Led Primary in a crowded room taught me
that how "advanced" an Ashtangi is has nothing to
do with what series they are on, how long they can
hold a handstand, or if they can put their feet on
their head in cortontionist poses. That's ableism.

In a tight space an "advanced" yogi will know where
their neighbors are in space and time, and be able to
work a pose like this while leaving space for others
to fumble. They'll move their mat to make room for
you for when you show up late. They'll smile at you
when you accidentally kick them. #bethatyogi

I added a few words to the translation of this poses’s name. It could be called “standing belly on thighs calm the fuck down pose,” but it’s already a mouthful. She’s the first pose of Ashtanga’s foundational series. Look gently at your nose. Calm your nerves with the standing forward bend. Chill out. Bend your knees till you feel great.

This pose is neat because it lets me use my imagination. I imagine that I am hanging from a window ledge for dear life. If I lean back and balance, I can dangle with straight arms. If I go forward and pull, I can pull with an infinite strength, so long as I meet myself *exactly* in the middle. Generally, this pose highlights where I’ve got some resistance inside keeping me from the balance. Sometimes legs, sometimes arms, sometimes belly, sometimes butt. Most often, it’s no one single thing but a concurrence of them and so the best thing to do is just try to find the middle and let things work themselves out.

Ah yes, “Try Angle” pose. Of course. The one where you try to make an angle.

Seriously: this is where you can start thinking about something called “yantras”— or sacred geometry. Its an on ramp for beauty and imagination inside of yoga practice.

Here’s how it works:

Try to visualize yourself as a collection of lines.

For example, can you visualize your bottom arm and front leg as a collection of vectors that connect and intersect?

Oh look! A triangle!

The real fun comes as you try to visualize more and more of them... at the same time. And, without looking, feel how changing one vector somewhere can change the angles elsewhere... all without losing track of your breath.

So trippy. So fun.

Come try and make an angle with me at functionalashtanga.com

Your friendly reminder about people in the health/fitness
industry. Three studios I taught at personally, no longer
physically exist. So if and when we "come back", it's not
actually that easy for me to just "jump back in". Oh... and
those studios you love? They may not be around when all is
said and done.
It's such a lose-lose situation for everyone and the lack of
help from Congress is laughable and while I've been lucky to
pivot for part of this pandemic, not everyone is so lucky.

Its that time of year again: resolution season. When you work in spiritual communities, gymnasiums, and/or wellness centers, you can't miss it.

Being aware of it doesn't mean that I've had to engage in it; I've typically been abroad, studying with my teachers during this pivotal time of transformation. I reckon what I've had come across my desk this time of year is more the "run-off"-- how it impacts those in my communities. Over the years, I've been struck by the dichotomy of response: managers and studio owners were thrilled to see rookies and wayward weekend warriors returning, while many yoga teachers themselves found that their progress in creating community was often frustratingly glutted by folks who lacked commitment, thereby "taking away from" the more committed practitioners.

Woof.

It's so easy to see both sides of it, and so easy to look down one's nose at so much associated with this malarky: conflating yoga with "getting fit", the pressure to be anti-fat, and of course all of the other dogwhistles things out there that say "you're not good enough."

I'll say it again: woof. But, it doesn't have to be this way inside of the lab of our own teachings and practices.

Come see more of my thoughts on this, and how to approach this season as both a professional and a practitioner, over at FunctionalAshtanga.com

This morning was the first time in four months l've
been able to bind after my shoulder injury.
@michaeljoelhall led a slow progression through the
marichy series. It wasn't forced but slow and
controlled. On Saturday I was able to stack my
shoulders over my wrists for a split second handstand
in @ericabaca202's amazing class. These are the
littlest things but they feel huge. More importantly I'm
truly focused on rebuilding my practice. This morning
I was able to say look at what I'm doing rather than
0mg I can't believe I can't grab my foot in this pose l've
always been able to grab my foot in this pose. I feel
less angry towards my practice but am constantly
reminding myself now that the advanced practice is
the mental part not the asana. The hardest asana isn't
always the most advanced.

The Yoga Club’s very first ad will be right here.

When I first started coming to DC, I would go to a little coffee house at 22nd and P (love to Soho!) to hang out, spending time reading all of my favorite (read: free + edgy) DC newspapers— The Blade, the City Paper... and Pathways.

Each of these publications has struggled to stay in print over the last 10 years. I likely don’t need to tell y’all about the rapidly changing face of media— and how it has adversely impacted queer journalism, alt-newspapers, and trade-zines.

For y’all that haven’t been here for 30 years, lemmie tell ya: Pathways is the OG DC natural living/holistic health trade publication. Last year, Pathways didn’t have a print publication (due largely to the pandemic... and the changing landscape of readership).

One of the reasons i love DC so much is precisely because i was able to find my tribe— and so much of that is due to publications like this. Who knew that the local publications i loved growing up I’d eventually get to work with?

We went with Pathways first because it’s owned by my bestie’s bestie— and you know I love family owned and friend-ran.

For 7 years, my yoga program, DC Ashtanga, was fiercely independent and grassroots — and while we remain firmly non-commercial, the Yoga Club (my new practice space) wants to help others find community while also supporting and elevating others in our community.

While DC ashtanga will remain a grassroots practice group (as it always has been), we’re now proudly in residence in our new home at theyoga.club, and it is a pro ledge to help Pathways relaunch in print, so that other little woo woo gays can find a copy... and a tribe.

For anybody who finds it
challenging to get to yoga:
regular mornings are the way to
go. This program is very exciting.
Return of the Mysore program:
• Starting in September, @michaeljoelhalli will join our
Shala family and offer a daily Mysore program, Monday
to Thursday 6:30-10:00am, with some additional
Mysore classes on select Saturday mornings. MJH will
also take on a Tuesday evening Ashtanga class and

MJH will begin hosting Mysore "Quick Shot"
classes on Saturdays from 9:30 - 11:00am offering all
students a taste of Mysore and a traditional Ashtanga
schedule. All existing Shala members can sign up for
the Summer Quick Shots 5 class program with no
additional costs. Warm WELCOME to Michael and his
students who will join our space.

On other note, I was tired, flustered, and running on empty this morning. I didn't think I could even start my practice. But I was there. Then I had a chat with my teacher who taught me to let the routine guide me. Then we chanted. Then I started at "One". Then I kept going. I let the routine guide my practice.

My mom used to say “and all my boys still call” when she was talking about her life and her happiness.

I get it a lot more now. Especially when my students who were “kids” when we started “call.”

I feel a deep sense of family when those who I’ve worked with, my peers on the path, share with me as I share with them about our lives.

There are fewer joys as sweet, to know the nectar of inspiration and love that they continue to bring to me, in ways once unimaginable and beautiful.

In December of 2021, I began two months of living in Mexico. My parents moved down to the Yucatán right before COVID hit— my brother and his lady lived down there first. It had taken forever to sell my parents home— and the future was looking bright. Then my brother died. Then Leigh died. And my folks were locked in and locked down.

On the one hand, I was glad they were safer there than here. On the other, I was presented with profound grief. Those months in Mexico, replacing my yearly sabbatical to India, provided time with my first and most influential teachers: my mom and dad.

Plus, yoga on their roof looks a lot like some of my other favorite and meaningful roofs.

Having a consistent practice helped anchor me when things were truly terrible. If you’d like to learn a simple set of practices that match your unique needs, feel free to DM.

The Bhagavad Gita famously says "Yoga is the
journey of the self, through the self, to the self." At
the risk of sounding corny, I think yoga is also the
journey from me to we. I started yoga to better
take care of myself. I continue to practice yoga
because it helps me take better care of myself and
better care of others. It also helps me put my
guards down enough to let others take care of me.
Yoga is not just about bending over backwards. It's
about reaching out a hand. You never know what-
or who- you might find on the other side. We heal
in community.

When doing the Marīchyāsana poses (A, B, C, D) remember to place more of the weight in your legs rather than sitting back on your pelvis. Visualize a Russian folk dancer in a low squat with hips just off the ground, dexterously kicking his legs out in front of him in time with the music. By lightening your seat and grounding your legs in Marīchyāsana, you'll win more freedom to project your spine forward and achieve a deeper forward bend.

The power of this practice lies in the vinyasa - breathe with movement
There are many asanas, we don't need to do all of them.
Surya namaskar, standing postures or half primary is good for most people
Regular practice is key, a habit just like brushing teeth or taking a shower
Advanced postures doesn't mean an advanced yogi

Happy Equinox (from @theyoga.club newsletter)
in image4. Holistic vs. Linear Thinking:
While linear thinking focuses on cause-
and-effect relationships, systems theory
embraces holistic thinking, considering the
entire systemn's dynamics. In yoga, this
means moving beyond viewing a single
pose as a cause and injury as an effect.
Instead, we explore the holistic context of
our practice, recognizing that many factors
contribute to our well-being. For example,
Michael has concert tickets for Friday night,
and he needs a night on the dance floor like
a good gay. This makes a 9am class time
tough. In order to make sure Michael
doesn't begin to resent his job, he needs
time to go blow off some steam. Having a
self-practice day ensures that the Mysore
room is in capable hands going forward.

🧘‍♂️Exploring Time Delays in #AshtangaYoga 🕰️

Did you see my article (link in bio)

🔄 I intertwine the practice of yoga with systems theory, emphasizing that the fruits of yoga bloom subtly and gradually, embodying a crucial time delay between practice and noticeable benefits.

🌱 It’s like a garden, little changes are a big deal over time— consistent practice nurtures physical strength, flexibility, and mental focus, forming a continuous cycle of growth and discovery. You can’t rush the crop.

🔄 Practice becomes a holistic exploration, intertwining physical, mental, and emotional spheres.

🚶‍♂️ Navigating through the complexities and time delays in yoga involves embracing vulnerability, seeking personalized guidance, and cultivating patience and compassion.

📝 Strategies like maintaining a practice journal and engaging in community practice are highlighted as vital in navigating through the subtle, continuous progress that unfolds over time.

🌟 Remember: The journey through Ashtanga Yoga is not merely about mastering poses but a holistic exploration that unfolds patiently and subtly over time.

THE PARADOX OF THE YOGA
FLAME
Balancing the Fire
In this phase of our journey, it's crucial to
reevaluate our relationship with the
transformative fire. Do we need to keep fueling it
to the same degree? Or is it time to allow the fire
to burn at a level that supports, nurtures, and
maintains our newfound state of balance? This is
not about extinguishing our drive or stopping our
practices, but rather about finding a sustainable
way to continue our growth.

offered differently than a yoga retreat as it's not
really a vacation in the traditional sense of
"getting away from it all", but rather an experience
that is cultivated to challenge us on various levels
that are highly dependent on each individuals life

My friend from @theyoga.club Liz @lizzoouli suggested I record my practice to check in on some asymmetries I'm balancing. She’s worried I don’t get enough time with a teacher for myself. I broke my ankle and rib last year getting hit by a bicyclist, and my wrist about a year before that getting hit by a car. I am really proud of my generally good attitude, outside of one meltdown phone call ( thanks @made_by_mara !!). Yoga has instilled patience and persistence, pragmatism and a solutions focused growth mindset. 10/10, would recommend. The yoga, that is. The getting hit by stuff is a 2/10.

If you need some support in your practice or healing journey, hmu. This stuff works.

I love sharing yoga and I think it shows. Here’s a peek in at a private coaching session with @mikematspace at @theyoga.club — We’re doing a study on shoulder movements that will enhance backbends, twists and binds. I didn’t wanna blow up his spot here, but I thought I looked extra muppety so I had to share.

These sessions are super fun —

Ashtanga Yoga is a system of yoga.

A system is a dynamic network of components that interact to produce specific outcomes. It includes:

1. Elements: The individual parts that make up the system.
2. Interconnections: The relationships and interactions between the elements.
3. Function or Purpose: The goal the system aims to achieve.

Systems exhibit lifelike qualities, even if they consist of nonliving elements. These characteristics include:

• Self-Organization: Systems can arrange themselves into orderly patterns without external direction.
• Self-Repair: Systems can mend themselves when disrupted within certain limits.
• Resilience: Systems can withstand shocks and continue functioning.
• Evolution: Systems can give rise to entirely new systems through innovation and adaptation.

When I got to Goa, I felt anonymous again.

In Mysore, I felt like everyone had heard. I was the ashtangi who got hate crime'd in the face after his house burned down. I wanted to be the tall pretty one. Or the smart one. But for now, I was very much the tragic one.

Luckily, Rolf wasn’t watching the news. I was just one more 6'3 drop back for him to do. And he was happy to oblige-- quietly sharing lite bits here and there in my ear about his work. But not so happy with it that I didn’t get assigned sone extra. Great.

After 26 years of shrinking myself for others, I got to just be the big one. You gotta gang up to take the big one down, and that's what was happening in real life. Literal gangs at home on the street, and little yogi gangs jockeying for status in Mysore.

When you question your ability to be loved by the universe, it is very helpful to see real love pouring out of someone else’s eyes.

Rolf didn’t need to know that I was stitched together with laughy taffy and titanium. Marci went to work on putting my physical injuries to bed and Rolf my heart. Neither needed a narrative. it is good, because I was so sick of my own story I couldn’t take it anymore.

As I’ve been working on my book-- it’s almost done -- the only part that I haven’t gotten into is my introduction into Systems Thinking-- through a gang beatdown.

I have known catastrophe again and again and gotten up to go again and again. This might sound like hubris, but check my receipts.

Rolf was able to help me see the interconnected nature of things in a way that makes the big picture possible. He also helped me understand how unspecial I was — while also feeling very very, very special. As Rolf would say, you do as you feel, and every day, the Yoga grows inside of you like a little plant.

In many ways, the development of my practice and the autonomy — the Santosh— the self sufficiency — means that there is less labor for my teacher to take on. Now i understand that my desire to be better in my physical practice was also so that Rolf had to do less for me.

Since he’s dead now, I will have to put my thigh down on the ground myself.

more about rolf:
@toncigulisija_shivarishi
toncigulisija_shivarishi My dear ashtanga yoga teacher Rolf
Naujokat, Narayan Puri left his body the day before yesterday.
My heart is heavy even though I feel my soul is freed. Only his
presence in this world has always given me strength to push
my way. Ashtanga has not been a part of my life for quite
some time. It is completely irrelevant to how I feel about him.
Neither did it matter to him what physical practice of yoga a
man does, nor did it to me.
Rolf was a disciple of Santosh Puri who was Naga Baba. He
initiated him into that sacred order 45 years ago and gave
him mantras and rituals. He spent 2 years with his Baba in
Haridwar.
After that he left his kutir and found ashtanga yoga he had
been teaching for the rest of his life.
Rolf was a being of light. Over the 10 years period, as long as
I used to come to him, somehow he was always the same.
The body slowly aged, its insides did not really change. Every
time you would come we would carry on as if we had never
parted.
His presence radiated softness, love and eternity, with which
he touched the hearts of many people. Most of such beings
from the Baba order have their own lilac, game, through
which limits the number of people who will be around him.
Marcy, Rolf's wife did the duty well. I think they had a blast.
Dear friend and teacher, you will always remain in my heart
• Marcy hugs to you

When I started practicing in 2002, there wasnt a yoga studio on every corner. Yoga hadn’t quite hit the granola standard yet (when its not just for hippies anymore). Practice in general was still counterculture, with lineage-based yoga studios having been established for a decade or two. It wasnt yet seen from a consumerist athleisure lens.
This was at a time when traditional yoga studios had begun to propagate naturally into smaller studios from their spry, allowing 30-something teachers to enter full time teaching, inside their own four walls. It was a time before the big boxes, the local chains, and venture capital from Wall Street. Yes, at one time, independent yoga studios were owned by people who had made exotic journeys and devoted insane amounts of time to their spiritual quests amd studies.

So what happened? Head to michaeljoelhall.com to read more.

The modern yoga industry has shifted away from teaching a practice that once ecnouraged and even required ongoing learning, self-reflection, and personal growth. Instead, the commercial interests have been prioritized over genuine education. This shift has left both students and teachers navigating a system that often exploits their desire to learn and grow. Nowhere is this tension more evident than in the yoga teacher training system, which, while serving as a lifeline for the industry, has become deeply flawed.

In memory of Paramaguru Sharath Jois.

I had the privilege of practicing with Sharath in Mysore over several years, an experience that shaped me profoundly, both as a person and as a practitioner. Under his guidance, I earned my authorization to teach Ashtanga Yoga, an accreditation that has meant a great deal to me. Sharath was dedicated to continuing the practice of Ashtanga yoga in the Mysore style, and his teaching held space for a wide spectrum of practitioners, allowing us to experience both the discipline and the subtleties of this system of yoga. He was also quite funny.

As I reflect on his passing, I feel a deep gratitude for the time I had with him and a quiet, profound sadness at the close of a chapter in our community. Sharath’s role as a teacher was unique, and his influence will continue to ripple through the practice of those he taught directly and indirectly.

It never occurred to me that I would not be able to practice with him again. I learned so much from him, not only about Ashtanga, but about boundaries, humility, and support. His presence will be missed, but his teachings remain.

For those of us in this lineage, this is a time to connect with one another and reflect on what the practice has given us. It’s an opportunity to carry forward what Sharath imparted without placing anyone on a pedestal, simply honoring the legacy of a teacher who dedicated himself to sharing Ashtanga with the world.

Gratitud. Amor global, amigos.

I’ve often had other yoga colleagues wonder how I made it so so far in Ashtanga yoga. They say it with a laugh, and knowing wink. The truth is that deep inside we’re all zebras in a room full of horses. I like to think that I’m a unicorn in a room full of zebras. But I know its all just drag. There’s only one of us here anyway. What I think my colleauges really mean is “you look like you’re having a lot of fun with this identity.” I get where they’re coming from— you’re not supposed to overly identify with this experience. Sometimes I think they just can’t fathom that you might have fun with a constructed identity and be able to let go of it. Ask any drag queen the second best part of getting into drag. Getting out of it. It’s the paradox between “be yourself because everyone else’s taken” and “ life is too important to be taken seriously. ”

Yoga is meant to create a greater awareness of the totality of human experience – – and that means all the joy and the sorrow along the way. But I know for sure, when I’m practicing Yoga, I feel better— it reminds me I’m alive.

There was a time when I practiced Ashtanga yoga and I had a real idea of getting ahead— more poses, prettier, stronger. But as many of you know, ive had major challenges along the way—body and mind. But my spirit… I noticed that when my feelings around practices moved towards sorrow or frustration, a friction would arise. Sometimes you just have to watch yourself get hot, ya know? Its so important not to flinch or look away from your feelings! Periods of difficulty or ‘stink’ are just inherent to pursuing ambition.

The frustration I experienced within my yoga practice is of what I think I want my practice to be, and it has a way of stealing the joy from whatever my practice is. Youve heard these things before.

Once youve seen it, the way that our reactions dont align with our espoused beliefs— and appreciating the humanity in it - it takes hypeocict and turns it into levity— its FUNNY to be so bent out of shape about something so full of joy.

Healthy ambition must exist in the realm of non harming, and so when our desires for advancement bring us suffering, we must know it isn’t just about advancement— be ause a real yoga is equimonious. No, it’s about fear of death and the reality of dying before i get some brass ring (or perpetually moving goalpost).

But like I said, once youve seen see it, you cant unsee it.

And, ya know, im still having fun.

And when I’m not, I say something like “try to have a good time before ya die, wouldnt ya, hall?”

Resistance bands are great for end-range strength training, and this can be especially beneficial for Ashtanga Yoga asana practice—here’s the “why” in both anatomy and Ashtanga terms:

1. Why resistance bands work for end-range strength

Resistance bands provide what’s called variable resistance: the further you stretch them, the more resistance they provide. This makes them perfect for training end-range strength—that’s the strength required when your muscles are either fully lengthened or fully shortened. Think of the top of a backbend, the deepest point in Supta Kurmasana, or holding your leg behind your head: these are all end-range positions.

Unlike free weights, bands make it harder as you move deeper into the range, which is the opposite of most real-life strength patterns (where you tend to be weakest at the extremes). So by training at those extremes with resistance bands, you’re preparing your muscles and joints to be strong, stable, and supported in yoga’s most demanding positions.

2. Why that’s good for Ashtanga yoga

In Ashtanga, especially the Intermediate Series and beyond, we are constantly exploring the limits of flexibility and control. But:
• Flexibility without strength is like stretching a rubber band with no tension—it’ll snap or sag.
• End-range strength helps prevent injury by supporting joints in vulnerable positions—like Kapotasana or Karandavasana.
• It also helps balance the nervous system’s stretch reflex. If your nervous system doesn’t trust you to be strong at end-range, it will limit your flexibility. But when it feels you’re strong and stable, it lets you go deeper—safely.

3. Systems Thinking

From a systems view, resistance bands act as an elegant feedback mechanism. They amplify the demand precisely when the system (your body) is most vulnerable—end-range. By strengthening the feedback loop between mobility, control, and proprioception, bands help shift the whole system (your practice) toward resilient adaptability—aka fewer injuries and deeper poses with less drama.

They are really great for proprioception and intrinsic stability.

Resistance Training for Ashtanga:

I follow a push/pull/leg split, 3/on 1/off. I dont follow a neat m/w/f 7 day a week schedule— I rotate as best I can.

I like to lift and then practice shortly after, or I try to practice early and lift later (8 hours later, in fact).

When I’m short on time, I do a full body work out 2-3x a week, alternating between compound pushing and pulling movements.

If I’m in a hypertrophy (mass building) phase, im lifting for about an hour. If I’m in a maintenance phase, its about 30 minutes. If i need an attitude adjustment, its a group class.

Yoga practice is like playing a musical instrument.

We must practice for both skill and pleasure.

At first its scales, and then its compositions. Soon, we create our own music. We iterate and iterate. We remix. Freedom comes through experience and discipline.

At some point we burn the method. We destroy the reference. The joy in creation must be met in equal parts by destruction for the dance to be sustained. And this is how a purposeful life becomes art.

Only from formlessness can a form be created.

Pain can wake us up. It means its time to adjust. But how?

The Yoga of Synthesis is a holistic approach to spiritual practice that integrates the four major yogic paths—Karma Yoga (selfless service), Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Jnana Yoga (knowledge), and Raja Yoga (meditation and mind control)—to develop all aspects of the practitioner: body, heart, intellect, and soul. Popularized by Swami Sivananda, it acknowledges that most individuals benefit from a balanced cultivation of these diverse faculties rather than an exclusive focus on one path.

In the context of Ashtanga Yoga, this synthesis naturally unfolds through the eight limbs outlined by Patanjali, where physical practice (asana), ethical living (yama and niyama), breath work (pranayama), and meditative absorption (dhyana and samadhi) together mirror this integrative approach.

It’s systems thinking in spiritual form: each element supports and influences the others, creating a dynamic interplay that guides the practitioner toward self-realization.

Colonizers gonna colonize.
Oppressors going to oppress.
Its your body, its your choice.

These aphorisms help push back against self-reinforcing loops of domination—social, cultural, political, even spiritual. It’s a systems insight dressed in streetwise wisdom. Could I be any more explicit? Hello!

In Systems Thinking, Donella Meadows would call this a reinforcing feedback loop—where the outputs of a system feed back into it and amplify its behavior. Oppression, like colonization, is often maintained not by a single decision or act, but by persistent patterns, institutions, and narratives that replicate themselves over time.

This is why practices like Ashtanga Yoga can be quietly revolutionary. When practiced with awareness, they cultivate true inner freedom—and the ability to see, question, and ultimately disrupt these harmful loops. But yoga divorced from its roots—or co-opted by the very systems of oppression it seeks to dissolve—can also become just another tool of colonization. Which is why the how and why of practice matter as much as the what.

Discipline matters, but independent thinking, high conscientiousness and empowered agency should be the emergent properties from practice.

In reclaiming bodily autonomy, ethical clarity, and collective responsibility, you’re not just doing yoga—you’re decolonizing it.

Okay, let’s talk about Ashtanga yoga, or rather, what it’s become in the hands of the market.

I’ve often spoken about systems and how they behave, and what I see happening with Ashtanga, particularly on platforms like Instagram, is a classic example of a distortion of purpose within a system.

We have a practice, Ashtanga, that by its very nature demands discipline, patience, and internal focus – tools for transformation and self-realization. It’s designed to help us understand ourselves and regulate our nervous systems, to feel better from the inside out.

Yet, what we often see is a system, driven by commercial imperatives, that reduces it to a “visual commodity.” Suddenly, it’s about aesthetics, hyperflexible bodies, and “bite-sized” content.

This isn’t the whole picture, is it? It’s a feedback loop where what’s easily digestible and visually appealing gets amplified, even if it sacrifices the true essence.

Even I, in my own work, might find myself in a situation where I’m participating in the very system I critique, currently running an ad and using my six-pack (fleeting though she may be) as a vehicle for presenting information to get people into yoga and meditation.

That’s the challenge of working within complex systems – there’s often a degree of complicity just by being a part of them. But the critical point is to always remember the true goal of the system.

Ashtanga, despite these external pressures and misrepresentations, persists. Why? Because, as with any truly effective system, it works. It provides real self-love and deep understanding for those willing to commit and dig deeper. It’s a powerful reminder that while external pressures can distort and simplify, the underlying purpose and effectiveness of a well-designed system can still endure for those who seek its authentic benefits.

Come practice.

Teaching Ashtanga—really teaching it—takes time, mentorship, oversight, and a commitment to serve.

Chasing perfect alignment in Ashtanga is a trap. The body is not a static structure. It is a living system that changes daily. Fixating on an idealized form can absolutely lead to strain, frustration, and duh injury.

Turning the practice into some sort of like rigid stick that has a sharp edge rather than a dynamic process of growth. Alignment should serve internal balance, not just external aesthetic. Forcing form can cause harm. Alignment should support the body, not push it into shapes. It isn't ready for.

Yoga is a straightforward path towards liberation from narrowmindedness and the suffering it brings. Some teachers miss the mark— oops— by confusing success in shapes vs an expanded consciousness capable of holding boundless compassion.

A good teacher combats cognitive dissonance and spiritual bypassing by openly discussing advantages AND lamenting the disadvantages inherent in each of us as we take on spiritual practice.

Who won’t let you criticize them? Ready for another organizational red flag? Leadership that won’t allow criticism, of course!

If we don’t encourage a multiplicity of viewpoints, we are inherently narrow sighted. If you must hold the same view as leadership in order to get a say, you are being controlled. I do not like echo chambers. An organization that creates one on purpose is not only inherently fragile, but in a predicament of its own making. Again, who wont stand for criticism? Authoritarians.

High Pressure Dynamics and Surveillance is NOT ok!

The federal government is now monitoring people for anti-authrotiarian views on the Internet and blocking critics of the right from entering the united states. Its not just geopolitics, though.

I once had an Ashtanga Yoga Teacher so high on her own stash she contacted a trusted friend @chocoestates and mentor of mine to tell them that @pegmulqueen was a danger to me because she regularly encouraged me to write.

People are so out of their own scope of practice, and they dont even know it.

Prg and Kristen (not friends independently) regularly made me believe Imy words were powerful and worthy. that ashtanga professor made me believe i was untrustworthy. People are sooooo controlling, and I missed it!

Im amicably divorced— my charisma is both fine and it has its limits. i’m old enough now to have enough data about myself to understand that.

It’s really simple – – are the rules of your organization in place to foster an independent community based on values and personal mastery, or is the organization solely designed to establish the leader in a position of unquestionable authority? More on YouTube!

When leaders make decisions for their constituency behind closed doors without consulting said constituency, an organization is no longer designed to serve the people. This creates a sense of hierarchy, and inside of that hierarchy leaders are placed above the law.

Whistleblowers are often shunned. Luckily for us, it’s actually a good sign of a toxic group. When the priority is protecting the group and not the members of the group, there’s a problem. And it’s an easy one to spot!

Manipulation comes in all kinds of forms— intellectual, emotional, professional.

Look for shunning and a lack of respect for nonmembers. Looks for discrediting. If an organization lacks transparency and accountability, it’s likely toxic.

Being a part of something is wonderful. Movements, clubs, communities. These organizations shouldn’t demand a loss of your personal identity or sense of sense of self. High pressure communities have a way of twisting these conversations because of the inherent philosophical paradox of self and not-self in Ashtanga philosophy.

Do you find that you are encouraged to bring people into your organization? It’s a great thing to do, who doesn’t wanna share something great? When you apply your critical thinking skills, if it looks like you’re more important for clout or cash, somethings up.

In DC, we have a few different teachers, each with differences in approach, each with people who vibe with that approach. It’s nice that people have choice here, and in a healthy community you’ll see as much ease with referring out as you will see recruiting in. Easy come, easy go. Why? These are people, not revenue streams or clout bolsters.

Financial transparency creates an equitable environment for both parties. The teacher’s income needn’t be a secret.

If teaching Mysore is a labor of love, it’s nice that the students know. But burn out happens when financial needs arent being met. It’s OK to talk about this stuff.

If your organization is values based, it’s not a crazy assumption to hold that the leader or director should also hold those values.

if doing the right thing, we’re always profitable, everyone would always do it. but just because it isn’t always profitable, doesn’t mean it can’t be.

Shame is a lousy motivator. When teaching with a methodology that included gatekeeping postures, it because a place where real student-teacher friction occurred in my yoga room. It wasn’t always clean friction. Heres a story from a decade ago: at some plont that year, I had failed to speak directly to a student about a dynamic that was bothering ME.

My student was feeling stuck in a particularly sticky pose, and the friction from other places allowed for weird dynamics. i didn’t understand those dynamics yet. I see clearly now how the dynamic of keeping someone at a pose when they feel ready to move on fosters a loss of agency and fosters authoritarianism and inadvertently becomes a power move, whether you mean it like that or not. I was in my first five years, and had yet to start disassembling the pedagogy. At some points, my buttons got pushed by that students behavior. I yelled and told them to leave the room. I was sooooooooo out of line. And boy, did I owe that student an apology. It was that moment that broke my illusion: I did not like this dynamic and it felt abhorrent to the nature of Ashtanga and yet somehow also baked in. I am grateful for that students forgiveness and for our mutual respect making clear something needed to shift, and it would be my responsibility. Students shouldn’t be yelled at, most especially the devoted ones who are questioning their discipline to a dysmorphic degree.

Those dynamics needn’t exist.

I used to say that teachers should never sleep with their students. I still feel that way broadly, but a number of people in mentorship roles and friendship roles have had long, long relationships with former students. My teacher cremated her husband last year, him being perhaps my dearest heart’s teacher. She was his student 20 years ago.

Time delays in a system can help highlight the difference between a pragmatic, transparent room with agency and a room with an authoritarian vibe. Are sexual relations between leaders and community members given clear protocols for safety? Generally, i think not. This is not a efficacious strategy.

I think the best bet is don’t sleep with your students, I think the second best bet is make sure that there is a transparency and accountability if a relationship starts.

I’m no HR expert, but your yoga teacher probably didn’t go to seminary school to hear all this. And anyway, its not like that has a 100% score, either. We can anticipate and intervene better, I think when we remain pragmatic and transparent.

Theres a theory that people want strong male leaders instinctually because of their value to survival for our ancient kin. Brian Klaas posits that we call authoritarian leadership “Strong Man Tactics” for that very reason.

As a big, strong, dude— i get how this might be inconvenient news.

According to Antwerp School of Business: “Research shows that introverted leaders are often better equipped to tackle complex problems than their extroverted counterparts. They tend to be more open to others’ input and create space for collective collaboration.”

As a gregarious person, I can see how this might be inconvenient news.

They continue: “This is essential because solving complex challenges requires collective leadership. Leaders who can unite diverse perspectives and co-create solutions are best positioned to address today’s pressing issues.

Yet, despite the need for collaboration and diversity, we continue to favor outdated leadership models centered on strength and dominance. This is not what we need now, but it’s what we keep choosing.”

in order to not find an entropy towards accumulating power without earning it through service, I remain mindful of these sentiments. it doesn’t cost me anything to do that, I’m still as good as I ever was. I just come in this package.

Look around at your community: is there a narrative of inclusion and openness? Do you see it reflected in diversity of membership? What about community thought leaders? Leadership?

Who is historically responsible for platforming bad actors? Have they made any concessions about their learning journey? Or is it all just a litttttttte too on-message?

Where is the reparation? Where is the reconciliation?

Look around at who has not taken real responsibility for the reinforcing loops of bad behavior in their systems. Especially when they want to take credit for or be a part of a balancing loop. Of course it feel inauthentic. It is.

As a community, we have a history to look at. Who didn’t blow whistles— and perhaps most importantly: Why not?

What forces are at play?
communal complicitness,
clout-protecting players, or systemic silencing?

I think its a bit of each.

Hi, I’m Michael Joel Hall. I started @dcashtanga as a mysore style ashtanga yoga shala in 2014. I’m sharing best practices for decentralizing authority and creating a more robust, antrifragile community. It’s free, and I’d love you to join if you’re interested. Let me know if you have any trouble with dcashtanga.com

I haven’t had time for 26 + 2 in months and months but I always have time for this.

None of this is normal.

THE SYSTEMATIC DISMANTLING OF DEMOCRACY STANDS IN DIRECT OPPOSITION TO THE YOGIC ETHICS OF AHIMSA (NON-VIOLENCE), SATYA (TRUTH-TELLING), ASTEYA (NON-STEALING), BRAHMACHARYA (RIGHT USE OF ENERGY), AND APARIGRAHA (NON-HOARDING). WE ARE HERE, WE LOVE YOU, AND WE ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE.

Long time Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga teachers — the ones who have been teaching consecutively for a decade or more— what have you learned?

Long time Ashtanga Yoga Teachers who no longer teach, why not? Please share in the comments.

Appreciating Ashtanga yoga as an indigenous insight practice means understanding that the practice is interconnected to the place that its from, those people, that topography, and that culture. These practices have to be adapted so they are honest and efficacious as part of your culture/community— and what works in one place won’t work in another. Lots on this subject at dcashtanga.com

in imageYou're not alone in seeing the dysfunction. Find the people who can also see it. Create spaces—even informal ones—where honest conversation is possible. Some of my most powerful teaching happened in hallway conversations after class. People would share what they were noticing, validate each other's perception, realize they weren't crazy for seeing what they saw. Community isn't about creating another system. It's about creating conditions where truth-telling is possible. 3. Practice Non-Identification You are not your role. You are not your title. You are not the system. Every time you come to your mat and just breathe—you practice remembering this. You practice being the awareness that sees the system rather than being consumed by it. 4. Work at the Smallest Scale That Matters Don't try to reform the entire organization. You can't. The system will eat your efforts and
5. Know When to Leave

Sometimes the most intelligent response is to exit a pathological system.
Not every system can be reformed from within. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is leave—find a different job, find a different teacher, build a different community.
This isn't failure. It's discernment.
Several of my federal students eventually left government work. Not in rebellion, not burned out, but consciously—recognizing that the system wasn't serving their development anymore, and choosing something different.
The practice gave them the capacity to see clearly, which gave them the courage to choose differently.
