I implore all of my RIC friends to read this, hell all of my friends!!! If */*
matter to you, then #blacklivesmatter. There is no separating the two!
I'm black, I have always been black, and will continue to be black until |
take my last breath. Being black is not all that I am, but it's a large part
of who l am. When you don't see that, respect that, or appreciate that,
then you don't see me at my fullest and most wonderful. If seeing me
and my blackness offends you, there lies *your* problem, not mine. I'm
no longer going to keep quiet or hold back, to appease those who may
feel uncomfortable talking about and thinking about race. l've come a
long way from the girl who "hated" her blackness, not because | actually
hated my blackness, but because the world around me hated my
blackness, which I then internalized. I hope that you do want to see me,
and I hope that you do work to educate yourself, and I hope you do try
to understand, and I hope you do develop empathy. But if not, that'll
have to be okay. l'll keep it pushin, because *l see myself*: black,
beautiful, strong, intelligent, passionate, and devoted to educating
these babies about how to embrace, love, except and *see* their fellow
human

I see you.
I think to myself, what a lovely, kind, young lady has
grown into a lovely young women.

in imageWHITE FRAGILITY: WHY IT'S SO HARD FOR WHITE PEOPLE TO TALK ABOUT RACISM
feel some unease around certain groups of people,
if only a heightened sense of self-consciousness.
But this feeling doesn't come naturally. Our un-
ease comes from living separate from a group of
people while simultaneously absorbing incomplete
or erroneous information about them. When the
prejudice causes me to act differently—I am less
relaxed around you or I avoid interacting with you
—I am now discriminating. Prejudice always mani-
fests itself in action because the way I see the world
drives my actions in the world. Everyone has preju-
dice, and everyone discriminates. Given this reality,
inserting the qualifier "reverse" is nonsensical
When a racial group's collective prejudice is
backed by the power of legal authority and insti-
tutional control, it is transformed into racism,
far-reaching system that functions independently
from the intentions or self-images of individual ac-
tors. J. Kēhaulani Kauanui, professor of American
studies and anthropology at Wesleyan University,
explains, "Racism is a structure, not an event."13

in imageBalance Gym and CrossFit Balance are deeplydisappointed
by the recent comments made by Greg Glassman, the founder
of CrossFit. We are also extremely frustrated by the lack of
leadership from CrossFit HQ and their tone-deaf and
inadequate responses in addressing the recent crises in the
USA.
It has become evident that our values don't match those of
CrossFit HQ and we are actively taking steps to move forward
without their involvement. This is a work in progress, and we
appreciate your patience as we look at our options over the
coming days.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to our directors with any
comments, concerns, or input on how you want our community
to proceed. Black Lives Matter.
