I'm thankful for my teachers in all of their forms for awakening me to the insight of the happiness of pure Being. A place without the poison of conditioned existence, the poisons of prejudice and hate. I'm thankful for my teachers, who provided the antidote (like a jungle physician). That antidote: be yourself. No hate. No prejudice. Just joy. Just love. Vande Gurunam.

NFL Remonstration #5:

"The news that former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam is gay holds significant social and cultural ramifications. But from a purely football perspective, his decision to come out prior to May's NFL draft will make his path to the league daunting, eight NFL executives and coaches told SI.com.

In blunt terms, they project a significant drop in Sam's draft stock, a publicity circus and an NFL locker room culture not prepared to deal with an openly gay player. Sam, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, was projected as a mid- to late-round draft pick prior to his announcement.

While none of the executives overtly condemned Sam's decision, their opinions illuminated an NFL culture in which an openly gay player -- from the draft room to the locker room -- faces long odds and a lonely path."

I apologize for my purposefully divisive comments on prayer, fundamentalism, and letter of the law religion. I recognize in them a lack of compassion.

As an individual who prays to a supreme (not Diana Ross) power, I see value in prayer. Due to the value I also see in the dissolution of labels and constructed beliefs, I let my interest in the dissonance that can bring destruction override equanimity in tone and presentation.

I cannot destroy your constructed beliefs nor force an experience of any kind-- I forgot that, as my passion got in the way.

Please understand: I am challenged in tonality by strong opinions on faiths that recommend slaughter or subjugation. Many do.

A better framing: does your faith pray to a God that would cast anyone to a hell for getting the name of God "wrong"? That would enslave a people? That kills? How does this make you feel in light of recent tragedies?

This is my teachers' teacher, Pattabhi Jois.

This week marks the seventh year of his passing. He died before I began learning his method.

I wasn't sure what to say to honor him, as he touched so many people directly, and yet for me, indirectly.

I didn't want to appropriate, and yet I am so inspired by his work.

When I saw this image, I knew what it was I wanted to say.

When I die, I hope it is my good humor that is remembered-- just like yours. Thanks, KPJ. I owe you one.

I fell asleep on my yoga mat today-- I didn't make it far, and it wasn't time for rest.

Last night, I couldn't sleep... I was wrestling with black lives mattering, brown lives mattering, pink lives mattering, white lives mattering...how to find parity between that and the fact that I believe that no one exists on purpose and life itself is a consequence of action (and so, it's only meaning is that it is an effect).

Everything comes down to charachter, and the world is full of valorless men and woman who wear all kinds of uniforms and masks.

It is also full of people who do the right thing, even though no one is keeping score.

This is the Hour
We have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people
this is the Hour.
And there are things to be considered:
Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Where is your garden?
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.
This could be the time!
There is a river flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold on to the shore.
They will feel they are being torn apart and they will suffer greatly.
Know the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let go of the shore,
And push off and jump into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above water.
See who is there with you and celebrate.
At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally.
Least of all, ourselves.
For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.
The time for the lone wolf is over.
Gather yourselves.
Banish the word "struggle" from your attitude and your vocabulary.
All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
"We are the ones we've been waiting for..."

Maybe the cicada is my spirit animal? Some of y'all are monarchs, others painted ladies-- that's well and good.

"They have an exceptionally loud song. Most cicadas are cryptic, singing at night to avoid predators. The periodic cicadas spend most of their lives as underground nymphs, emerging only after 13 or 17 years, which may reduce losses by starving their predators and eventually emerging in huge numbers which overwhelm and satiate any remaining predators.

Cicadas have been featured in literature since the time of Homer's Iliad, and as motifs in art from the Chinese Shang dynasty. They have been used in myths and folklore to represent carefree living and immortality."

I wish that the White House would have acknowledged the male spouse of Luxembourgs's male prime minister. I wish that 45 would have made a statement for June, which is Pride Month. I do not wish I hadn't been assaulted physically and verbally most days growing up-- told my voice, my body, my mind, and my capacity for love were wrong, ugly and loathesome-- because it has made me who I am today. However, I do not wish it on your children, my children, or anyone else.

As a child, that kind of violence almost killed my spirit. As an adult, it almost killed my human form.

The silence is deafening and the message is clear. Systematic erasure. You want to help? Know that it's pride. Know when black history month is. Talk frankly and openly about sexuality and race. If you can't, ask for help. Im talking frank conversation from your cohort. If you don't have anyone you can have this conversation with, I'm here. Get real. Get woke. GET LOUD.

The overlap between being objectified by people of power and situations where assault of the sexual variety occurs runs the risk of allowing "me too" to be viewed from the cheap seats as a bit of a toothless tiger.

Sexual harassment occurs constantly. I have been sexualized and demeaned to some degree in every job I've had as an adult. I suspect almost every woman/gay men have, too. I know almost every gal in town has been catcalled, for sure.

On a hierarchical level we have given passes to strong men taking sex acts by force. The amount of people who voted for a man who literally propagated grabbing woman by their pussies and doing whatever he wants with them needs addressing. "They'll let me," he says.

At least 16 women have publicly accused Trump of forcibly attempting to kiss, grope and have sex with them. He is on the record saying he forcibly touches woman.

This is not sexual harassment-- this is sexual assault.

What kind of accountability do we reasonably expect men in power to have when we give them a "yes, but" along with a "me, too" So glad we're speaking up: remember this in 3 years, fam. The more voices we raise, the more potential we create.

Take that "Me, too" and talk to you husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, and kids.

Me, too.

https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14404-night-work/

‘Night Work’ is one of my favorite albums of all time by my favorite band of all time. This review is basically saying that music by gay people for gay people is not palatable to a straight audience and therefor not inclusive enough.

This is why I’ve been so fucking pissed for 2017 and will carry that fire into 2018. This is why Living Single isn’t on Hulu. Because I have participated in fucking straight people culture without complaint and have had to pull teeth to get straight people to even consider coming to a queer event (other than the pride parade-- but who doesn't love a parade? I digress ). This is to me self evident of the fact that straight folk (especially, but not limited to, white ones) think their activities are normal, and gay folks activities are not. No wonder gay folk dont want y'all in their safe spaces-- folks act like theyre on safari or doing something lurid. No gurl, it's a fucking Thursday and the drinks are cheap.

You know who does come to queer events when I ask? My non-white female friends. They also know how to treat the space (ie, putting away any urge to behave in an entitled manner). You know who came with me to see the Scissor Sisters tour Night Work? Wanna know who watches Living Single?

This article, and this situation, is garbage. If this made your asshole pucler, then maybe now you know why your gay friends low key think you’re the worst and if you’re white, your non-white friends low key think you’re even worse than that. But Facebook is an echo chamber, so if you made it this far, you’re probably not the problem.

Back to the pitchfork review:

“If the cover of Night Work did not clue you in, let's just state the obvious right now: This is a very, very gay album. Whereas the first two Scissor Sisters records found a way to translate specifically gay subject matter into big-tent camp that opened up their appeal to anyone with a taste for colorful dance music and 1970s radio pop, their third album isn't quite as inclusive. They are no less tuneful, but their aesthetic and lyrical themes are more firmly rooted in gay culture, to the point that many straight listeners may find themselves feeling like outsiders looking in. Instead of presenting a queer pop sensibility for the masses, they've gone deeper into their subcultural niche."

We're seeing an unbelievable rise in yoga chains in DC-- Yoga District, Yoga Works, Down Dog, The Georgetown Yoga/Shaw/Dupont Conglomo, Yoga Heights, and Corepower. What does it mean for those who are highly trained and highly skilled to have chains expanding? What does it mean for those who want access to a contemplative practices and philosophy sets that goes back a few thousand years? What does it mean for those who don't know any of that and teach fitness with curated playlists under a homophone? “…I must confess that I am not afraid of the word “tension.” …there is a type of constructive nonviolent tension that is necessary for growth. Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, we must see the need of having nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men to rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood. So, the purpose of direct action is to create a situation so crisis-packed that it will inevitably open the door to negotiation"

AS MLK WROTE IN HIS Birmingham letters, Rattling the establishment is very useful. Its true, you might find yourself a pariah, but to an unrepresented community of people, you are representation, giving voice to those that have been largely voiceless. It requires valor and bravery, as MLK later came to discover, as standing your ground may in fact become the hill that you die upon.

Much like my affinity for drag, I recognize that yoga will never truly be mainstream because it "mocks ego," as RuPaul says. Yoga is very good for marginalized people. It's goodness for the voices unspoken is directly proportionate to its threat to the establishment.

The establishment, the Man, is invested in maintaining its power, and because that power comes from a deified ego, the establishment further marginalizes those that dare question ego.

Anything that mocks ego becomes an inherent threat.

Those vested in the power that comes from the establishment, and for this I say as clearly as I can: especially ONLY from the establishment-- those people will always attempt to (at best) diminish and (at worst) silence (by any means necessary) that which shows that the emporer has no clothes. They will do it with a clear conscience as only those who have made a god out of a toothless tiger can murder guiltlessly.

The very best way to rattle the ego starts by creating tension. Without discounting your inherent value, question your worth. You can't use your privileges for good if you don't admit you have them. We all have god given rights and innate gifts. What are your gifts? Where have you struggled? You can't recognize your growth potential without a sober assesment of where you are. This will help build empathy.

Then, go out and get loud.
Rattle the establishment.
Do yoga.
Fight AIDS.

Make MLK, RuPaul, and this little yogi proud and go out there and color with all the colors in the crayon box.

stories?
The stories and events featured in this exhibition
are both important and familiar. The three episodes-
the life of Pocahontas, the Trail of Tears, and the
Battle of Little Bighorn-remain an active part of
national life and conversations. They have unique
staying power.
Each generation of Americans decides all over again
what the events mean. George Armstrong Custer
was a hero until he wasn't. Andrew Jackson and
Pocahontas are not the same people our parents

That Straight Culture Doesn't:
• You don't have to get married if you don't want to.
• You don't have to have kids if you don't want to.
• It's nobody's job to flirt with you or be flirted with. If you're
into someone, do the work and tell them.
• People will judge you and reject you without knowing you.
This isn't your fault. You're not the broken one.
• Your clothing and hair and other style choices are to make
YOU feel good first and foremost.
• Signaling to your people is the secondary job of hair and
clothes. But don't dress for them. Be you, they'll see it.
• Anyone who judges you badly for your hair and clothes is not
your people and can fuck off.
• Physical affection in public is an act of deliberate courage.
• Family is a matter of choice. Loyalty is a two-way street.
• Mental health is important and it's hard. Anxiety and
depression are natural reactions to the world.
• Sensitivity isn't weakness. It just means you pay attention.
• People who think "sex" only means a penis in a vagina
deserve pity. (They don't deserve better sex, just pity.)
• Everyone who's interesting reinvented themselves after
their world fell apart. Just like you did.
• Community is a safety net from an unfair worid. Let it catch

A while back I was the victim of a hate crime — I was assaulted and hospitalized for being other.

They took nothing except my illusions. And I’m left asking what kind of other was it that made me a target:

White in a black neighborhood?
A perception of Gentry in a neighborhood undergoing gentrification?
Being queer?

I’m not sure what exactly cause it. “White faggot” isn’t quite enough to go on.

What the media does with marginalized communities and race relations is appalling. The questions it asks and posits are cheap (I’m looking at you, Roxanne Gay).

I implore everyone reading this to leave your gated communities and engage. Ask better questions. Thank you for checking up on me. And remember: I love you. I’m sorry you hurt.

This pose is neat because it lets me use my imagination. I imagine that I am hanging from a window ledge for dear life. If I lean back and balance, I can dangle with straight arms. If I go forward and pull, I can pull with an infinite strength, so long as I meet myself *exactly* in the middle. Generally, this pose highlights where I’ve got some resistance inside keeping me from the balance. Sometimes legs, sometimes arms, sometimes belly, sometimes butt. Most often, it’s no one single thing but a concurrence of them and so the best thing to do is just try to find the middle and let things work themselves out.

Its that time of year again: resolution season. When you work in spiritual communities, gymnasiums, and/or wellness centers, you can't miss it.

Being aware of it doesn't mean that I've had to engage in it; I've typically been abroad, studying with my teachers during this pivotal time of transformation. I reckon what I've had come across my desk this time of year is more the "run-off"-- how it impacts those in my communities. Over the years, I've been struck by the dichotomy of response: managers and studio owners were thrilled to see rookies and wayward weekend warriors returning, while many yoga teachers themselves found that their progress in creating community was often frustratingly glutted by folks who lacked commitment, thereby "taking away from" the more committed practitioners.

Woof.

It's so easy to see both sides of it, and so easy to look down one's nose at so much associated with this malarky: conflating yoga with "getting fit", the pressure to be anti-fat, and of course all of the other dogwhistles things out there that say "you're not good enough."

I'll say it again: woof. But, it doesn't have to be this way inside of the lab of our own teachings and practices.

Come see more of my thoughts on this, and how to approach this season as both a professional and a practitioner, over at FunctionalAshtanga.com

@michaeljoelhall led a slow progression through the

controlled. On Saturday I was able to stack my
shoulders over my wrists for a split second handstand
in @ericabaca202's amazing class. These are the
littlest things but they feel huge. More importantly I'm
truly focused on rebuilding my practice. This morning
I was able to say look at what I'm doing rather than

always been able to grab my foot in this pose. I feel
less angry towards my practice but am constantly
reminding myself now that the advanced practice is
the mental part not the asana. The hardest asana isn't
always the most advanced.

The Yoga Club’s very first ad will be right here.

When I first started coming to DC, I would go to a little coffee house at 22nd and P (love to Soho!) to hang out, spending time reading all of my favorite (read: free + edgy) DC newspapers— The Blade, the City Paper... and Pathways.

Each of these publications has struggled to stay in print over the last 10 years. I likely don’t need to tell y’all about the rapidly changing face of media— and how it has adversely impacted queer journalism, alt-newspapers, and trade-zines.

For y’all that haven’t been here for 30 years, lemmie tell ya: Pathways is the OG DC natural living/holistic health trade publication. Last year, Pathways didn’t have a print publication (due largely to the pandemic... and the changing landscape of readership).

One of the reasons i love DC so much is precisely because i was able to find my tribe— and so much of that is due to publications like this. Who knew that the local publications i loved growing up I’d eventually get to work with?

We went with Pathways first because it’s owned by my bestie’s bestie— and you know I love family owned and friend-ran.

For 7 years, my yoga program, DC Ashtanga, was fiercely independent and grassroots — and while we remain firmly non-commercial, the Yoga Club (my new practice space) wants to help others find community while also supporting and elevating others in our community.

While DC ashtanga will remain a grassroots practice group (as it always has been), we’re now proudly in residence in our new home at theyoga.club, and it is a pro ledge to help Pathways relaunch in print, so that other little woo woo gays can find a copy... and a tribe.

megaphone just to hear themselves talk. They
drone on, preach to the choir or berate it, replace
energy with melodrama. But there's always folks
standing by quietly, the ones with clipboards,
cases of water, who get the permits, set up bail
funds, print the info pamphlets, organize voter
drives, work at tiny non-profits when the glory of
the day is over. Those are the real teachers...
Social media is in a protest formation right now.
An effective protest works as a classroom, a
funeral march and a parade. We don't berate folks
for how they learn, grieve or feel joy. We don't yell
at them for the legibility of their signs. Whether
you are "doing enough" is between you, your
conscience and your God (if you have one).
Tragedy and war help us to find teachers. Who is
asking if you need help with how to help? Who is
offering tangible solutions and who is selling
hysteria? Who is using the megaphone as a
microphone and who is quietly building
infrastructure? Who is making you feel helpless
and who is making you feel powerful?

in image4 years since the WHO declared COVID-19 a
pandemic. Many of us never dropped our shoulders
after that. Some of us literally can't breathe the same.
COVID was not the great equalizer we naively hoped,
but it was an event of mass clarity. Changed how we
saw people and government. There are friends and
family I still don't talk to, not after I witnessed risks
and privileges so different from mine. Did I overreact?
The official death toll is 7 million, but related deaths
are immeasurably higher. Is 4 years enough to mourn?
When will I get over streaming my grandmother's
funeral on a shitty signal on Facebook Live?
COVID fractured our version of reality. How could
some of us believe in a disease and others not? See
masks and vaccinations so differently? And how do
we consider millions dead and disabled but
also...good things? How many origin stories start with
"during the pandemic, I..started my business, learned
to (blank), got pregnant, got this dog, fell in love."
COVID changed our center of gravity by 6 feet, forced
us to cross the Rubicon. What parts of us stayed in

in imageMany cultures believe that an eclipse is the sun and the
moon being devoured by mythological creatures. In Chinese
mythology, it's a dragon; in Norse and Korean, it's wolves. For
the Cherokee and Vietnamese, it's a frog. For the Maori in
New Zealand and Hindus in India, it's a demon. For the Pomo,
it's a bear. They all created "noise rituals" to scare away the
dark: whistling and screaming at the sky, or banging on
drums or pots and pans.
We've mastered noise rituals in our modern world, too. We
created plenty of places to yell at one another about things
we don't understand or can't control: elections, race, gender,
genocides, the climate. Even if yelling is more likely to move
the heavens than change another person's mind.
The Batammaliba in West Africa believe an eclipse is the sun
and moon in a celestial conflict. They perform the opposite
of a noise ritual: the community gathers for rituals of
forgiveness. Elders mediate conflicts, gifts are exchanged,
followed by feasts and music. They show the sun and moon
reconciliation by example.
There's no ritual big enough to heal current divisions. But we
can create rituals of absolution for just ourselves, quietly
warding off the demons of our own shame with a meditation
that says, "I may not understand what is happening, but life
is short, and the universe is infinite...maybe 1 really am just
doing my best in the darkness."

Here’s some stuff that made me stop and feel.

I save a lot of things that make me laugh, think, and cry. Here are a few of them. I have to get them off this phone! Im hacking my old Wii U for fun, and I’m out of memory for games and I just can’t add any more to my iCloud in good conscience.

I’m inspired by @gayunclemario2 — he’s always posting fire memes— but also because I saw this one episode of Geraldo when I was a kid with a bunch of club kid freaks. I was maybe 14-15? I kinda knew I was one of them, but didn’t know really what that meant… to be honest, i now know it just meant that I was gonna make bold outfits, listen to Madonna remixes and teach yoga — all while trying to help other people find freedom from this ridiculous trap we call society. Mario was on that episode (or maybe it’s all a fever dream now).

So here’s some stuff to look at while I finish my “Magneto was Right” essay. Find more at michaeljoelhall.com

In every community, both leaders and
misleaders emerge. Misleaders thrive
by pursuing their own agendas and
deceiving others to get support. The
sustenance of this behavior relies on
you feeling isolated and alone without
them. We assure you, you are not.

• The Malicious Practices Act (1933):
This law made it a crime to speak out or "make fun" of the
government and its leaders. This meant that even telling a joke
about Hitler could be considered a malicious attack on the
state.
• The Treachery Act (1934): This expanded on the 1933 law by
criminalizing any remarks that caused "severe damage" to the
welfare or reputation of the Third Reich or the Nazi Party.
What's notably different here is that Trump isn't using legal
means, but financial threats. He won't approve your merger.
He'll sue you personally. He'll start a DOJ investigation that
will cost you a lot of money. Same effect.

@laurenashtangayoga | think it's
overly vague, doesn't identify Taylor
Hunt, and doesn't speak to other
levels of abuse beyond sexual. It's a
nothing statement and I fear that it's
meant to preempt further
conversation. I don't trust that it's in
good faith by everyone who signed it. I
would wonder if the people who have
come forward are pleased with it. It is
so tone deaf. I can't imagine that they
are.

None of this is normal.

THE SYSTEMATIC DISMANTLING OF DEMOCRACY STANDS IN DIRECT OPPOSITION TO THE YOGIC ETHICS OF AHIMSA (NON-VIOLENCE), SATYA (TRUTH-TELLING), ASTEYA (NON-STEALING), BRAHMACHARYA (RIGHT USE OF ENERGY), AND APARIGRAHA (NON-HOARDING). WE ARE HERE, WE LOVE YOU, AND WE ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE.

in imageROLE OF THE ARTIST
To fill in the gaps that institutions and
power structures of dominant culture
overlook or deliberately avoid:
• TRUTH when there are lies or silence
* CARE where there is neglect
* RADICAL IMAGINATION where there is
stagnation, dead ends, and repitition of
oppression
• LIBERATION where there is oppression
• CONNECTIVITY where there is isolation
& HOPE where there is despair
* SALVE for wounds
* ACKNOWLEDGEMENT for those who feel unseen

Immanuel Kant
In his early work, Kant embraced
German rationalism. In 1781, Kant
stepped back onto the stage with the
Critique of Pure Reason: shifting
the center of knowledge from the
world to the mind that knows it.
No longer was the mind a passive
mirror of reality. Instead, reality
always appeared through the
architecture of our perception.

in imageWhy great minds change
their own
These examples remind us that
true critical thinking begins at
home. To interrogate our own
assumptions, to stay open when
experience, dialogue, or
suffering presses against us —
that is philosophy at its deepest.
In our polarized age, where
doubt is mocked as weakness,
their lesson is urgent. Can we
welcome change in our own
thinking - even delight in it?
