"A famous financier understood [life value] when he asked and answered his own rhetorical question: "When does a man have enough money? When he makes his next million." Time and time again, we find that the people who are truly satisfied and enriched in this life, the ones who have achieved what is indisputably happiness, are the ones who have sought to create value for others. -Charles S. Sanford, Jr

When tempted to skip a pose today in my practice, I thought of what Peggy shared: "The ashtanga yoga system should never be confused with "power yoga" or any whimsical creation which goes against the tradition of the many types of yoga scriptures. It would be a shame to lose the precious jewel of liberation in the mud of ignorant body building." -- Mr. Jois

Like trees and children, change is inevitable with time. You are who you were and will be who you are. Metamorphosis and realization are not acts of forgetting, but I hear they require time and patience.

My first conference was fascinating. I got to view Sharath, the (these are my terms) titleholder of the Ashtanga lineage, through the lens of a man who deals with keeping the purity of a practice in the real world-- the world of parties, internet gossip, and multiculturalism. A fascinating, non-textbook experience. A highlight, paraphrased: "A man with two gurus (gu ru: dispel dark) is like a man with two doctors-- take both pieces of advice/take both pills, and you surely are worse for it."

Led Primary, chanting, Sanskrit, philosophy, and two trips to the Ramakrishna ashram. Today was busy, but had a keen reminder to count my blessings: I saw a funeral procession today. It consisted of a flower adorned handmade chair, the deceased strapped in, carried and paraded to the crematorium. Tambourines and gongs, laughter and tears.

And the new dead leaves

And so resigned to bravery

“Hey, Tengo, do you know the difference between the English words ‘lunatic’ and ‘insane’?” she asked. “They’re both adjectives describing mental abnormality. I’m not quite sure how they differ.” “ ‘Insane’ probably means to have an innate mental problem, something that calls for professional treatment, while ‘lunatic’ means to have your sanity temporarily seized by the luna, which is ‘moon’ in Latin. In nineteenth-century England, if you were a certified lunatic and you committed a crime, the severity of the crime would be reduced a notch. The idea was that the crime was not so much the responsibility of the person himself as that he was led astray by the moonlight. Believe it or not, laws like that actually existed. In other words, the fact that the moon can drive people crazy was actually recognized in law.

"For better or worse, the areas that Fives explore do not depend on social validation; indeed, if others agree with their ideas too readily, Fives tend to fear that their ideas might be too conventional. History is full of famous Fives who overturned accepted ways of understanding or doing things (Darwin, Einstein, Nietzshce). Many more Fives, however, have become lost in the Byzantine complexities of their own thought processes, becoming merely eccentric and socially isolated."

"the siddhis are essential to achieving samadhi, which is the true power ... to deny them [the siddhis] is to deny your ultimate freedom. You can only step beyond these powers once you've acquired them. Renouncing them beforehand, as many practitioners of yoga do, mimics yet forestalls the true liberation... In addition, renouncing the siddhis, as some yoga teachers today advocate, keeps you powerless, and perpetuates your suffering as a victim." --Yoga, Power, and Spirit: Patanjali the Shaman, Alberto Villodo, Ph.D

I apologize for my purposefully divisive comments on prayer, fundamentalism, and letter of the law religion. I recognize in them a lack of compassion.

As an individual who prays to a supreme (not Diana Ross) power, I see value in prayer. Due to the value I also see in the dissolution of labels and constructed beliefs, I let my interest in the dissonance that can bring destruction override equanimity in tone and presentation.

I cannot destroy your constructed beliefs nor force an experience of any kind-- I forgot that, as my passion got in the way.

Please understand: I am challenged in tonality by strong opinions on faiths that recommend slaughter or subjugation. Many do.

A better framing: does your faith pray to a God that would cast anyone to a hell for getting the name of God "wrong"? That would enslave a people? That kills? How does this make you feel in light of recent tragedies?

This is my teachers' teacher, Pattabhi Jois.

This week marks the seventh year of his passing. He died before I began learning his method.

I wasn't sure what to say to honor him, as he touched so many people directly, and yet for me, indirectly.

I didn't want to appropriate, and yet I am so inspired by his work.

When I saw this image, I knew what it was I wanted to say.

When I die, I hope it is my good humor that is remembered-- just like yours. Thanks, KPJ. I owe you one.

I fell asleep on my yoga mat today-- I didn't make it far, and it wasn't time for rest.

Last night, I couldn't sleep... I was wrestling with black lives mattering, brown lives mattering, pink lives mattering, white lives mattering...how to find parity between that and the fact that I believe that no one exists on purpose and life itself is a consequence of action (and so, it's only meaning is that it is an effect).

Everything comes down to charachter, and the world is full of valorless men and woman who wear all kinds of uniforms and masks.

It is also full of people who do the right thing, even though no one is keeping score.

We are people. Disarm the police. Disarm the populace. Disarm your angry, bigoted minds. I don't know how. I have no answers.

All I want for all beings is peace.

This is the Hour
We have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people
this is the Hour.
And there are things to be considered:
Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Where is your garden?
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.
This could be the time!
There is a river flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold on to the shore.
They will feel they are being torn apart and they will suffer greatly.
Know the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let go of the shore,
And push off and jump into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above water.
See who is there with you and celebrate.
At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally.
Least of all, ourselves.
For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.
The time for the lone wolf is over.
Gather yourselves.
Banish the word "struggle" from your attitude and your vocabulary.
All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
"We are the ones we've been waiting for..."

This is why yoga will never be mainstream.

Engaging in materialistic or sensual pleasure with little focus on higher purpose is not yoga-- it's called bhoga. Bhoga, left unchecked, can lead to pain in the body or/and mind-- and this is called roga.

On the flip side, Roga and Bhoga can both lead back to yoga. Once you make a commitment to not harming or deceiving by paying attention to what is, the pain and discomfort can lead you right back out of the yick and into something better: reality.

For yoga to arise, attention to reality must be fixed and firm... Even when it becomes unpleasant. Even when it is inconvenient. Only then can we see what's under the hood.

Yoga will never be mainstream, but nowadays is a great time for alchemy. For transmutation. Turn this time of grasping and grabbing and pain into abiding love and bliss, by doing the inconvenient and uncomfortable.

When the tide comes in, all boats are lifted. "Other" is only illusion. The side effects of yoga are worth the effort: abiding joy, made of honesty and love. This does not mean "free of pain" but it does mean "free of suffering."

Maybe the cicada is my spirit animal? Some of y'all are monarchs, others painted ladies-- that's well and good.

"They have an exceptionally loud song. Most cicadas are cryptic, singing at night to avoid predators. The periodic cicadas spend most of their lives as underground nymphs, emerging only after 13 or 17 years, which may reduce losses by starving their predators and eventually emerging in huge numbers which overwhelm and satiate any remaining predators.

Cicadas have been featured in literature since the time of Homer's Iliad, and as motifs in art from the Chinese Shang dynasty. They have been used in myths and folklore to represent carefree living and immortality."

“…I must confess that I am not afraid of the word “tension.” …there is a type of constructive nonviolent tension that is necessary for growth. Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, we must see the need of having nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men to rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood. So, the purpose of direct action is to create a situation so crisis-packed that it will inevitably open the door to negotiation"

AS MLK WROTE IN HIS Birmingham letters, Rattling the establishment is very useful. Its true, you might find yourself a pariah, but to an unrepresented community of people, you are representation, giving voice to those that have been largely voiceless. It requires valor and bravery, as MLK later came to discover, as standing your ground may in fact become the hill that you die upon.

Much like my affinity for drag, I recognize that yoga will never truly be mainstream because it "mocks ego," as RuPaul says. Yoga is very good for marginalized people. It's goodness for the voices unspoken is directly proportionate to its threat to the establishment.

The establishment, the Man, is invested in maintaining its power, and because that power comes from a deified ego, the establishment further marginalizes those that dare question ego.

Anything that mocks ego becomes an inherent threat.

Those vested in the power that comes from the establishment, and for this I say as clearly as I can: especially ONLY from the establishment-- those people will always attempt to (at best) diminish and (at worst) silence (by any means necessary) that which shows that the emporer has no clothes. They will do it with a clear conscience as only those who have made a god out of a toothless tiger can murder guiltlessly.

The very best way to rattle the ego starts by creating tension. Without discounting your inherent value, question your worth. You can't use your privileges for good if you don't admit you have them. We all have god given rights and innate gifts. What are your gifts? Where have you struggled? You can't recognize your growth potential without a sober assesment of where you are. This will help build empathy.

Then, go out and get loud.
Rattle the establishment.
Do yoga.
Fight AIDS.

Make MLK, RuPaul, and this little yogi proud and go out there and color with all the colors in the crayon box.

How do we tether a soul to another? What twine or taffy makes them stay? Is it love or god or byproduct of inevitability?

Perhaps there is no real delineation-- all three the same, differently labeled, but effectively borderless. So then too, this is a reflection on both marriage and friendship, both of which can bind so equally and tightly. It seems to me there is no distinction -- both a pact with another to participate in the process of complete cooperation with the inevitable. Sounds an awful lot like enlightenment.

The great sages of the yogic path say that the surest way to the end states of yoga are through love and devotion. They call that path to enlightenment bhakti.

There is no surer way to know God and the self than love.

It is said that before entering the sea
a river trembles with fear.
She looks back at the path she has traveled,
from the peaks of the mountains,
the long winding road crossing forests and villages.
And in front of her,
she sees an ocean so vast,
that to enter
there seems nothing more than to disappear forever.
But there is no other way.
The river can not go back.
Nobody can go back.
To go back is impossible in existence.
The river needs to take the risk
of entering the ocean
because only then will fear disappear,
because that's where the river will know
it's not about disappearing into the ocean,
but of becoming the ocean.

What does it mean to go to a place like Ecuador in order to create and participate in economy? And how does one do that in a respectable, regenerative, respectful way?

Ask Kristen.

She and her partner Juan are growing cacao and heirloom cacao in a regenerative food forest with zero waste.

The optics in this post hit close to home.

I try not to dress up in a costume for the purposes of selling you the product of yoga. I can’t actually sell yoga yoga— and sell you my time.

My time as a practitioner, a seeker, a student, and a finder. And as a yoga facilitator/teacher/guide, it’s why you don’t see me in my dhoti very often... And why i tend to only wear my mala when I meditate.

There are so many ways to signal your desire to be seen as aspirational— biceps and bindis and baba harem pants. Andean throws. The thing is, when you have something valuable to share, you want to share it.

When you have devoted your life to something, you hope that you can make enough money to keep devoting your life to it. And, you might even try to sell the image of the thing using appropriators prints.

It’s a tricky thing... this authenticity piece. I love that Kristen and Juan encourages folks to make of all of it what you will.

In the mean time... should I teach you to handstand, shirtless?

I added a few words to the translation of this poses’s name. It could be called “standing belly on thighs calm the fuck down pose,” but it’s already a mouthful. She’s the first pose of Ashtanga’s foundational series. Look gently at your nose. Calm your nerves with the standing forward bend. Chill out. Bend your knees till you feel great.

This pose is neat because it lets me use my imagination. I imagine that I am hanging from a window ledge for dear life. If I lean back and balance, I can dangle with straight arms. If I go forward and pull, I can pull with an infinite strength, so long as I meet myself *exactly* in the middle. Generally, this pose highlights where I’ve got some resistance inside keeping me from the balance. Sometimes legs, sometimes arms, sometimes belly, sometimes butt. Most often, it’s no one single thing but a concurrence of them and so the best thing to do is just try to find the middle and let things work themselves out.

Ah yes, “Try Angle” pose. Of course. The one where you try to make an angle.

Seriously: this is where you can start thinking about something called “yantras”— or sacred geometry. Its an on ramp for beauty and imagination inside of yoga practice.

Here’s how it works:

Try to visualize yourself as a collection of lines.

For example, can you visualize your bottom arm and front leg as a collection of vectors that connect and intersect?

Oh look! A triangle!

The real fun comes as you try to visualize more and more of them... at the same time. And, without looking, feel how changing one vector somewhere can change the angles elsewhere... all without losing track of your breath.

So trippy. So fun.

2021
Its that time of year again: resolution season. When you work in spiritual communities, gymnasiums, and/or wellness centers, you can't miss it.

Being aware of it doesn't mean that I've had to engage in it; I've typically been abroad, studying with my teachers during this pivotal time of transformation. I reckon what I've had come across my desk this time of year is more the "run-off"-- how it impacts those in my communities. Over the years, I've been struck by the dichotomy of response: managers and studio owners were thrilled to see rookies and wayward weekend warriors returning, while many yoga teachers themselves found that their progress in creating community was often frustratingly glutted by folks who lacked commitment, thereby "taking away from" the more committed practitioners.

Woof.

It's so easy to see both sides of it, and so easy to look down one's nose at so much associated with this malarky: conflating yoga with "getting fit", the pressure to be anti-fat, and of course all of the other dogwhistles things out there that say "you're not good enough."

I'll say it again: woof. But, it doesn't have to be this way inside of the lab of our own teachings and practices.

Come see more of my thoughts on this, and how to approach this season as both a professional and a practitioner, over at FunctionalAshtanga.com

In our culture privacy is often confused with secrecy. Open, honest,
truth-telling individuals value privacy. We all need spaces where we
can be alone with thoughts and feelings - where we can experience
healthy psychological autonomy and can choose to share when we
want to. Keeping secrets is usually about power, about hiding and
concealing information.

am not good enough' with 'I am good
enough.' In other words, they take the
opposite and they try to invest it. That
still keeps the world at the level of
polarities. The art is to go behind the
polarities. So the act is to go not to the
world of 'I am good' to counteract 'I
am bad, or 'I am lovable' as opposed
to 'I am unlovable' But go behind it to
'Iam.' Iam. I am. And I am includes
the fact that I do crappy things and I
do beautiful things and I am. That
includes everything and I am.

The Bhagavad Gita famously says "Yoga is the
journey of the self, through the self, to the self." At
the risk of sounding corny, I think yoga is also the
journey from me to we. I started yoga to better
take care of myself. I continue to practice yoga
because it helps me take better care of myself and
better care of others. It also helps me put my
guards down enough to let others take care of me.
Yoga is not just about bending over backwards. It's
about reaching out a hand. You never know what-

When doing the Marīchyāsana poses (A, B, C, D) remember to place more of the weight in your legs rather than sitting back on your pelvis. Visualize a Russian folk dancer in a low squat with hips just off the ground, dexterously kicking his legs out in front of him in time with the music. By lightening your seat and grounding your legs in Marīchyāsana, you'll win more freedom to project your spine forward and achieve a deeper forward bend.

in image4. Holistic vs. Linear Thinking:
While linear thinking focuses on cause-
and-effect relationships, systems theory
embraces holistic thinking, considering the
entire systemn's dynamics. In yoga, this
means moving beyond viewing a single
pose as a cause and injury as an effect.
Instead, we explore the holistic context of
our practice, recognizing that many factors
contribute to our well-being. For example,
Michael has concert tickets for Friday night,
and he needs a night on the dance floor like
a good gay. This makes a 9am class time
tough. In order to make sure Michael
doesn't begin to resent his job, he needs
time to go blow off some steam. Having a
self-practice day ensures that the Mysore
room is in capable hands going forward.

"Acceptable Gays" have tried to distance themselves

since before those words existed. Yet Acceptable
Gays were not spared in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or

were. They still got their ass beat, they were still
outed and arrested under sodomy laws, they still
lost their jobs, their names were still printed in the

Acceptable Gays still died of AIDS in droves.
Today's "LGB Gays" are not enlightened or

is a very poetic " Have a Dream" speech, but not by the deep,

offered differently than a yoga retreat as it's not
really a vacation in the traditional sense of
"getting away from it all", but rather an experience
that is cultivated to challenge us on various levels
that are highly dependent on each individuals life

in imageMany cultures believe that an eclipse is the sun and the
moon being devoured by mythological creatures. In Chinese
mythology, it's a dragon; in Norse and Korean, it's wolves. For
the Cherokee and Vietnamese, it's a frog. For the Maori in
New Zealand and Hindus in India, it's a demon. For the Pomo,
it's a bear. They all created "noise rituals" to scare away the
dark: whistling and screaming at the sky, or banging on
drums or pots and pans.
We've mastered noise rituals in our modern world, too. We
created plenty of places to yell at one another about things
we don't understand or can't control: elections, race, gender,
genocides, the climate. Even if yelling is more likely to move
the heavens than change another person's mind.
The Batammaliba in West Africa believe an eclipse is the sun
and moon in a celestial conflict. They perform the opposite
of a noise ritual: the community gathers for rituals of
forgiveness. Elders mediate conflicts, gifts are exchanged,
followed by feasts and music. They show the sun and moon
reconciliation by example.
There's no ritual big enough to heal current divisions. But we
can create rituals of absolution for just ourselves, quietly
warding off the demons of our own shame with a meditation
that says, "I may not understand what is happening, but life
is short, and the universe is infinite...maybe 1 really am just
doing my best in the darkness."

where difference could be acknowledged, where we would finally all

Here’s some stuff that made me stop and feel.

I save a lot of things that make me laugh, think, and cry. Here are a few of them. I have to get them off this phone! Im hacking my old Wii U for fun, and I’m out of memory for games and I just can’t add any more to my iCloud in good conscience.

I’m inspired by @gayunclemario2 — he’s always posting fire memes— but also because I saw this one episode of Geraldo when I was a kid with a bunch of club kid freaks. I was maybe 14-15? I kinda knew I was one of them, but didn’t know really what that meant… to be honest, i now know it just meant that I was gonna make bold outfits, listen to Madonna remixes and teach yoga — all while trying to help other people find freedom from this ridiculous trap we call society. Mario was on that episode (or maybe it’s all a fever dream now).

So here’s some stuff to look at while I finish my “Magneto was Right” essay. Find more at michaeljoelhall.com

more about rolf:
@toncigulisija_shivarishi
toncigulisija_shivarishi My dear ashtanga yoga teacher Rolf
Naujokat, Narayan Puri left his body the day before yesterday.
My heart is heavy even though I feel my soul is freed. Only his
presence in this world has always given me strength to push
my way. Ashtanga has not been a part of my life for quite
some time. It is completely irrelevant to how I feel about him.
Neither did it matter to him what physical practice of yoga a
man does, nor did it to me.
Rolf was a disciple of Santosh Puri who was Naga Baba. He
initiated him into that sacred order 45 years ago and gave
him mantras and rituals. He spent 2 years with his Baba in
Haridwar.
After that he left his kutir and found ashtanga yoga he had
been teaching for the rest of his life.
Rolf was a being of light. Over the 10 years period, as long as
I used to come to him, somehow he was always the same.
The body slowly aged, its insides did not really change. Every
time you would come we would carry on as if we had never
parted.
His presence radiated softness, love and eternity, with which
he touched the hearts of many people. Most of such beings
from the Baba order have their own lilac, game, through
which limits the number of people who will be around him.
Marcy, Rolf's wife did the duty well. I think they had a blast.
Dear friend and teacher, you will always remain in my heart
• Marcy hugs to you

The call to split the TQ+ from the LGB is not new.
"Acceptable Gays" have tried to distance themselves
from Queers, Transgender and Non-Binary folks since
before those words existed. Yet, Acceptable Gays were
not spared in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s, no matter
how subtle, rich or famous they were. They still got
their ass beat, still outed and arrested under sodomy
laws, still lost their jobs, their names were still printed
in the papers, they still lost their homes under moral
clauses, still couldn't marry or serve. Acceptable Gays
still died of AIDS in droves.
Today's "LGB Gays" are not enlightened or
groundbreaking free thinkers, no matter what social
media says. They're clichéd bootlickers with no sense
of history. They believe this split would spare them but
our persecutors are just working their way backward

Immanuel Kant
In his early work, Kant embraced
German rationalism. In 1781, Kant
stepped back onto the stage with the
Critique of Pure Reason: shifting
the center of knowledge from the
world to the mind that knows it.
No longer was the mind a passive
mirror of reality. Instead, reality
always appeared through the
architecture of our perception.

These examples remind us that
true critical thinking begins at
home. To interrogate our own
assumptions, to stay open when
experience, dialogue, or
suffering presses against us —
that is philosophy at its deepest.
In our polarized age, where
doubt is mocked as weakness,
their lesson is urgent. Can we
welcome change in our own
thinking - even delight in it?
