mysore, ACC class, private client-- check. Up next? IMF, HUD. Then? HAPPY HOUR YOGA!!!!
hates sleeping "in" till 6am on Fridays-- then realizing it isn't enough time to get to mysore (tenley, not india) and my first class on time.
too sore for mysore.
did Mysore away from "home" for the first time. 🙂
has capital bikeshare all figured out. No excuses for no mysore as of the end of this week.
No one wants a teacher who doesn't practice. Off to Mysore.
Morning Mysore. I'm craving structure & discipline. 🙂

Aaaaand the Shala confirmed my registration. Its all happening.
Bummer: Tomorrow's my last day practicing with David Keil (its been great). Silver Lining: on to Antonella Accinelli. 46 days till India.
Today, I taught my last class of the year. It was also that last class before I leave for India. I'm going to miss my students... a lot.
Visa in hand, modified primary practiced (thanks for the company, Em), and now dinner with friends.

It's 85 here in Mysore. Seeing the driver holding a sign with my name on it was enough to make me want to cry, but the dangerousness of the car ride into town was enough to make me smile big. Best of all? I got to stay at the Southern Star/ Regalis-- exactly as planned. Antonella Accinelli will be pleased I didn't have to sleep outside.
I have an hours worth of stories (minimum) and its not dark yet.
I spent a good chunk of today sitting with the tuk-tuks after the house Shiva showed me didn't do the trick. Is 16000 Rupees an okay price for a house I'm going to share with a stranger? Your guess is as good as mine.
Sharath yelled at me twice, then yelled at everyone else. "The only thing worse than being yelled at is being ignored."
I broke a tooth today! A trip to vist Dr Judith Pereira in Mysore for a fix and clean! Amazing grand total? 1100 Rupees... $22 dollars. She also said I was the politest American she had ever met and complimented my parents. She said I should be proud of them. Thanks, Mom!
I moved into a gorgeous house on the top of a hill today. Fuck the rupee cheating ttuk-tuk and jay! to Apu, my new tuktuk friend <3
Between my "Ganesh is my OMboy" tee (thanks Karuna!) and silver nosering (thanks Lauren!), the locals are warming up to me. It also might be that I keep showing up and smiling like a crazy. Whatever.

My first conference was fascinating. I got to view Sharath, the (these are my terms) titleholder of the Ashtanga lineage, through the lens of a man who deals with keeping the purity of a practice in the real world-- the world of parties, internet gossip, and multiculturalism. A fascinating, non-textbook experience. A highlight, paraphrased: "A man with two gurus (gu ru: dispel dark) is like a man with two doctors-- take both pieces of advice/take both pills, and you surely are worse for it."
Two things: 1.) I do not smell like America. 2.) This farmers tan is outta hand. ... I will be fixing both promptly.
I am super intimidated by my Sanskrit class. Holy. Cow.
Led Primary, chanting, Sanskrit, philosophy, and two trips to the Ramakrishna ashram. Today was busy, but had a keen reminder to count my blessings: I saw a funeral procession today. It consisted of a flower adorned handmade chair, the deceased strapped in, carried and paraded to the crematorium. Tambourines and gongs, laughter and tears.
I've spent the past 7 hours debugging the fuckery that iTunes Match inflicted upon my iPhone. Finally fixed, and better than before. Going to the cricket field to do wind sprints-- a little bit of HIIT does the body good (plus maybe I'll pass out at 8, so I can be up and well-rested for Sunday Led at 4:30am).
Jesus, the pollution. I haven't thought I might need my inhaler in (I swear to Vishnu) years. YEARS. Anyway, we'll do that again on Tuesday.
7 hours of work, and do you know what my phone didn't save? Fucking Shala time. 10 minutes early was 5 minutes late. I can't win 🙁
Sometimes, you practice in the bathroom of the changing room and accept that as your penance.
Sunbathing.
Ahhhh! So this explains the extended celebration: It's Shankranti-- the Harvest festival celebrated all over India, though its named differently from state to state. Ganesh calls it 'thanksgiving' to mother earth.
Such a delicious, decadent practice. Making every movement (and flub) part of the beauty of creation, yet not rushing to the end. A freedom that one pointed focus can bring, and grace that should probably be there regardless *yum* #mysore
This is the first time I'm using Mid City Yoga's new comments section. I hope it a) works an b) is useful. http://midcityyoga.com/?p=630#comment-11617

A ton of fantastic assists in practice, a wonderful birthday party, and a thoroughly exhausting sanskirt . I'd call that a full day. #mysore
4 Surprises Today: 1) The Internet worked this morning, soI got to have a real skype date with the hubs. 2) My clothes were wet, so I practiced in long pants sans shirt (after a conversation in which I pronounced that I may never go topless). 3) Sharath moved me on to Pashasana (helllllllllllo, second series!) 4) I ran into Clare on the street right after practice 🙂 It's not even noon!
Patterns of practice: I now like doing Led in the changing room.No pushing, no quiet violence. Huh.
Sanskirt then dinner. I should not have made that banana smoothie-- I'm full-- hopefully that changes in 3 hours 😉
Survived led primary with Delhi Belly. Talk about humbling-- I felt like a human level.
tummy a'rumblin/popped a cipro lick'ty split/happy pracitce now-- This Haiku is dedicated to Pamela Xing and Lauren Twohig.
Sorry, Washingtonians: I'm not unhappy at missing a season of American politics.
First day practicing second: was taken to my ankles in dropbacks (backbends) -- never have I ever. Said aloud "ohmygod." Sharath laaaaughed and said "No fear, no fun."
I love that adult friends in India hold hands. It makes me want to be more touchy-feely. (it also makes me really miss holding hands with Roike).
Lazy morning, now off to find a bit of food and a bit of fun.

I haven't had caffeine In hours... Why can't I sleep? Gotta be up at 3:15, grr
Bitched for no good reason. Good sleep, off to practice!
A quick little gratitutde check list: 1) Anto is here! (!!!) 2) Roikes 3) My start time is earlier 4) [in case the others are too obnoxious] I've figured out how to add fiber into my diet 😉
Lesson: You can not expect to shirt to end up white if the water starts out brown. #laundry #mysore #santosha #justwearit
New apartment, new start time, new month. I've never been so excited for February in my whole life. #mysore
Navigating Mysore City is a daunting task. Fear not, with a copilot like Antonella, I fared well. The haul? A stove-top coffee maker, fisherman's pants, and "gym vests" (aka 4 bright and shiny tank tops) in hand. A warning: I am going to come home dressed like a yogi (I have a custom pair of 3/4 length pants being made). I am not done.
I have to be up at 3am. Sleep must come.
Sweets on Saturday leads to stiffness on Sunday. Never expect one day's work to be the next's. Paleo challenge after the moonday? #mysore

By the time I get back from practice the big game will be over (unless we have overtime!). Can someone give me a link to the Super Bowl so that I can watch it from the beginning?
Today, I walked my hands in from a dropback (backbend) and caught hold of my ankles. Then I straightened my arms. Never have I ever.

Tomorrow, I attempt to be (mostly) paleo in India. We'll give it a week and see what happens.
Paleo: India Edition -- Day 1? Success. Morning of day 2 feels awesome.
Two hours of yin, shirtless on the roof. Yum.
I made chocolate almond flour pancakes today for lunch. One heckuva paleo treat 🙂
Signs of the times: I want to see "American Reunion" and "Titanic" in 3D.
Halfway mark.
Making a list of things that I love whilst here in India became daunting (who has that much paper?). To whittle the list down a bit, we'll feature the letter "C".

My ass breaking the plastic chair in the apartment is a serviceable wake up call: I'm calling a moritorium on Peanut Butter until next Friday. 😉
Reading up on homebrew 'four lokos'. I woke up for practice, refresed, at 2:30. Which sentence is more absurd?

So many things to report: no water in my part of Gokulum, as such I smell like India, multiplied by white boy. Also: I've had three chais at Amruths, and so I have no shame in sharing.
I've wanted to do a coco fast for years (since I came home from Mexico with Giardia)-- four day fast starts tomorrow. I cannot believe I'm excited for such a thing.
sleep, practice, coconuts.
Off to be lovingly walked all over by the Three Sisters (ayervedic massage). Obv I miss my sisters and wives back home.
Muscle gripping bone-- visceral memories of my teachers and my lovers. Few pleasures run deeper. Jai Kristenji, jai Michael Roike;)
Just lost 15 minutes taking pictures in this morning's practice ensemble (headband and kungfu pants). #ashtangastylemaven
At some point 2:30am became a perfectly reasonable time to wake up for practice.
aaaaaaaaand the coming home dreams have started. In this one: I left my copy of "Anatomy of Hatha Yoga" in India. Anyone think this is telling?
A slow coffee morning before led primary at the shala. Here's hoping the onslaught of Indian heat has scared up space for me. #mysore

69 practices down, one to go. "Don't leave until you've left."
In my Indian swan song, something unexpected and new: rain.
Goodnight, Mysore. Don't be sad. We can say goodbye tomorrow.
In Bangalore, waiting to pay for my overweight bag. We're both gonna need to hit the gym this week. Seriously: all my love for all to whom I've said "See ya soon." The adventure isn't over, here nor there.

I didn't get in to Mysore for January, but when my teacher asks "who is your teacher" to one of those who have shared space in my Shala, I feel like I'm there, and niyamas take over. Is this "parampara"? Wow. I miss and love my teacher, but just wow. #dotherightthing

One of my dearest friends and trusted counsel. Who got my teaching in the Mysore room for the first time!? This woman. Well worth your time (and she has killer online content, too!)
https://www.yogajournal.com/practice/a-sequence-for-political-resilience
About ten years ago, i set a goal for myself to be on the cover of yoga journal. Today, i made it to the homepage.
10 years in, I think that's about right. Time and dreams change. Markers of success evolve.
Back then, I imagined that my perfect form and smiling face would make a valuable representation -- and mark an internal validation.
As practice is wont to, I eventually had a realization: I could do better. I wanted to share something more substantive than just form. The marker for validation had shifted dramticay.
I wanted to share some part of what practice had shared with me-- something that has helped me grow and thrive and that I have seen do the same for others time and time again.
Well, here we are. I talk about resilience. I share a modified primary series. I tried to use explicit language so as to maximize value and minimize confusion. .
I'm honored and thrilled. Simply in existing, it represents those who might feel marginalized.
I'm out, I'm queer, and I'm big. I'm a yoga practitioner who shares a powerful and potent practice steeped in tradition and that has a veracious efficacy.
I hope you find it useful, for yourself or for others

Here is an explanation or intersectional analysis as it relates to the Kobe story. I found it useful.
I donât know anything about current athletes who arenât gay and shirtless, so I only know of Kobe by how much he meant to a lot of people. When I saw he died, I said âoh wow.â
Later, I said, âdidnât he get accused of rape or something?â
My news feed is filled to the brim with stories of sexual assaultâ stories of black men, Indian men, and white menâ and they are all intense and complicated and people hold these men up high on pedastels while others say to tear them down and distance themselves. Iâve taken down the smiling visage of one such Indian man.
But guys, canât we think more deeply?

please pray for my loved ones **this is my teachers altar, on his rooftop shala.
I never thought I'd share a picture of it.
I practiced right here every day for a few years.
It is very special to me. My teacher has asked for prayers.

more about rolf:
@toncigulisija_shivarishi
toncigulisija_shivarishi My dear ashtanga yoga teacher Rolf
Naujokat, Narayan Puri left his body the day before yesterday.
My heart is heavy even though I feel my soul is freed. Only his
presence in this world has always given me strength to push
my way. Ashtanga has not been a part of my life for quite
some time. It is completely irrelevant to how I feel about him.
Neither did it matter to him what physical practice of yoga a
man does, nor did it to me.
Rolf was a disciple of Santosh Puri who was Naga Baba. He
initiated him into that sacred order 45 years ago and gave
him mantras and rituals. He spent 2 years with his Baba in
Haridwar.
After that he left his kutir and found ashtanga yoga he had
been teaching for the rest of his life.
Rolf was a being of light. Over the 10 years period, as long as
I used to come to him, somehow he was always the same.
The body slowly aged, its insides did not really change. Every
time you would come we would carry on as if we had never
parted.
His presence radiated softness, love and eternity, with which
he touched the hearts of many people. Most of such beings
from the Baba order have their own lilac, game, through
which limits the number of people who will be around him.
Marcy, Rolf's wife did the duty well. I think they had a blast.
Dear friend and teacher, you will always remain in my heart
• Marcy hugs to you

@ashtanga_luzern
In memory of Paramaguru Sharath Jois.
I had the privilege of practicing with Sharath in Mysore over several years, an experience that shaped me profoundly, both as a person and as a practitioner. Under his guidance, I earned my authorization to teach Ashtanga Yoga, an accreditation that has meant a great deal to me. Sharath was dedicated to continuing the practice of Ashtanga yoga in the Mysore style, and his teaching held space for a wide spectrum of practitioners, allowing us to experience both the discipline and the subtleties of this system of yoga. He was also quite funny.
As I reflect on his passing, I feel a deep gratitude for the time I had with him and a quiet, profound sadness at the close of a chapter in our community. Sharath’s role as a teacher was unique, and his influence will continue to ripple through the practice of those he taught directly and indirectly.
It never occurred to me that I would not be able to practice with him again. I learned so much from him, not only about Ashtanga, but about boundaries, humility, and support. His presence will be missed, but his teachings remain.
For those of us in this lineage, this is a time to connect with one another and reflect on what the practice has given us. It’s an opportunity to carry forward what Sharath imparted without placing anyone on a pedestal, simply honoring the legacy of a teacher who dedicated himself to sharing Ashtanga with the world.
