All out-bound yoga teachers in Washington, D.C. are out of work until at least April. There will be no compensation. Most of us pay at least our own health insurance, rent, and phone bill.
For most, these are recurring monthly expense in excess of $1500, required for survivalâ and not including food.
Itâs been a tough go of things in my industry: this is the second time i am have been forcibly removed from the workforce (without reimbursement!) due to my status as a contract employee in 15 months. My job is to provide meditation and mindfulness training and classes as a wellness service to different federal agencies, non-profits, and endowments â there is no unemployment for the self employeed.
When I was out of work last year for the government furlough, there was no âback payââ just a sharp decrease in my pay for the 35 days the government shut down. As I said, unemployment doesnât cover contractors. With stocks plummeting and 401ks evaporating, many of us who âresponsible savedâ are watching our safety net shrink at exactly the time we shouldnât be touching it.

The pivot to online training for your favorite wellness provider is not a hobbiest pivotâ itâs essential. Please consider reaching out to your favorite in-person provider and supporting them financially, digitally.

I have made a pivot towards online offeringsâ but the question becomes more existential. As someone who functions as a manual therapist *and* a facilitator/ of an indigenous practice that changes the mind and body radically... is my vocation dispensable? My lifeâs work?
Surely notâ but we do need protecting.
And we done been known.

Are you feeling stressed? Hungry for no reason? Irritable?
How about overly sleepy? Lethargic? A feeling of general malaise?
You might need to relax your system-- and I'm not talking in a shmaltzy bubble-bath-y way (please note: I love a bubble bath).

If you've had trouble getting back to a feeling of being centered, I recommend putting a tool in your toolkit that ca help.

One of the seminal yoga texts, the Bhagavad Gita, has the story of a Arjuna, a young Archer, going to war to fight injustices (against his cousins, no less). He grapples with the concepts of pacifism, patience, and change-- aren't Yogi's suppose to be peaceful??
âInaction is action,â Krishna tells him. He shows up as his chariot driver, guiding him to find a right action In his confusion and concern. Krishna doesnât want anyone to get hurt! Especially not his cousins... but as Krishna reminds him, sometimes it is a greater injustice to nor Fight for peace.

In September, Iâll be launching a 10-month integrative online Functional Ashtanga Training. We dive *deep* into functional anatomy, contextualized yoga humanities, and a collection of the most potent pranayama and meditation practices I have discovered in my 20 years of dedicated practice. Iâve spent two years developing this program, which includes 4 functional joint assessment for each participant (so you can measure your progress), 150+ 20 minute learning videos (Iâm still recording!), curated readings, and measured learning objectives (homework + quizzes). Of course, Iâll have office hours. Itâs capped very, very small for this first cohort, and costs 3,000â but Iâm gonna take 500 off if you sign up early. I added a few words to the translation of this poses’s name. It could be called “standing belly on thighs calm the fuck down pose,” but it’s already a mouthful. She’s the first pose of Ashtanga’s foundational series. Look gently at your nose. Calm your nerves with the standing forward bend. Chill out. Bend your knees till you feel great.

This pose is neat because it lets me use my imagination. I imagine that I am hanging from a window ledge for dear life. If I lean back and balance, I can dangle with straight arms. If I go forward and pull, I can pull with an infinite strength, so long as I meet myself *exactly* in the middle. Generally, this pose highlights where I’ve got some resistance inside keeping me from the balance. Sometimes legs, sometimes arms, sometimes belly, sometimes butt. Most often, it’s no one single thing but a concurrence of them and so the best thing to do is just try to find the middle and let things work themselves out.

Ah yes, “Try Angle” pose. Of course. The one where you try to make an angle.
Seriously: this is where you can start thinking about something called “yantras”— or sacred geometry. Its an on ramp for beauty and imagination inside of yoga practice.
Here’s how it works:
Try to visualize yourself as a collection of lines.
For example, can you visualize your bottom arm and front leg as a collection of vectors that connect and intersect?
Oh look! A triangle!
The real fun comes as you try to visualize more and more of them... at the same time. And, without looking, feel how changing one vector somewhere can change the angles elsewhere... all without losing track of your breath.
So trippy. So fun.

DC Unemployment is $137/month. Not to put too fine a point on it: my insurance went up to $555 a month.

Your friendly reminder about people in the health/fitness
industry. Three studios I taught at personally, no longer
physically exist. So if and when we "come back", it's not
actually that easy for me to just "jump back in". Oh... and
those studios you love? They may not be around when all is
said and done.
It's such a lose-lose situation for everyone and the lack of
help from Congress is laughable and while I've been lucky to
pivot for part of this pandemic, not everyone is so lucky.
