This is a mommy appreciation post. My parents were in their 70s when they decided to move to Mexico— and somehow now they’re in their 20s. It is a great blessing of this life to love your parents and be loved by them, and the older I get the more I appreciate that. One of my favorite things about my mom is that my friends call her Mama Hall, cause i think they know immediately how loved they are. It’s neat. She’s just like that, full of love and grace, while also being very, very funny. I try to talk to mom and dad for a good while every week, and I think I see mom more now than I have since I was a teenager.

Love you mommy! @gail.hall.927

Here’s some stuff that made me stop and feel.

I save a lot of things that make me laugh, think, and cry. Here are a few of them. I have to get them off this phone! Im hacking my old Wii U for fun, and I’m out of memory for games and I just can’t add any more to my iCloud in good conscience.

I’m inspired by @gayunclemario2 — he’s always posting fire memes— but also because I saw this one episode of Geraldo when I was a kid with a bunch of club kid freaks. I was maybe 14-15? I kinda knew I was one of them, but didn’t know really what that meant… to be honest, i now know it just meant that I was gonna make bold outfits, listen to Madonna remixes and teach yoga — all while trying to help other people find freedom from this ridiculous trap we call society. Mario was on that episode (or maybe it’s all a fever dream now).

My friend from @theyoga.club Liz @lizzoouli suggested I record my practice to check in on some asymmetries I'm balancing. She’s worried I don’t get enough time with a teacher for myself. I broke my ankle and rib last year getting hit by a bicyclist, and my wrist about a year before that getting hit by a car. I am really proud of my generally good attitude, outside of one meltdown phone call ( thanks @made_by_mara !!). Yoga has instilled patience and persistence, pragmatism and a solutions focused growth mindset. 10/10, would recommend. The yoga, that is. The getting hit by stuff is a 2/10.

If you need some support in your practice or healing journey, hmu. This stuff works.

in imageMany cultures believe that an eclipse is the sun and the
moon being devoured by mythological creatures. In Chinese
mythology, it's a dragon; in Norse and Korean, it's wolves. For
the Cherokee and Vietnamese, it's a frog. For the Maori in
New Zealand and Hindus in India, it's a demon. For the Pomo,
it's a bear. They all created "noise rituals" to scare away the
dark: whistling and screaming at the sky, or banging on
drums or pots and pans.
We've mastered noise rituals in our modern world, too. We
created plenty of places to yell at one another about things
we don't understand or can't control: elections, race, gender,
genocides, the climate. Even if yelling is more likely to move
the heavens than change another person's mind.
The Batammaliba in West Africa believe an eclipse is the sun
and moon in a celestial conflict. They perform the opposite
of a noise ritual: the community gathers for rituals of
forgiveness. Elders mediate conflicts, gifts are exchanged,
followed by feasts and music. They show the sun and moon
reconciliation by example.
There's no ritual big enough to heal current divisions. But we
can create rituals of absolution for just ourselves, quietly
warding off the demons of our own shame with a meditation
that says, "I may not understand what is happening, but life
is short, and the universe is infinite...maybe 1 really am just
doing my best in the darkness."

Eclipses are like the cosmic helping hand of the Universe. Imagine the energy of an Eclipse like a Universal hand that reaches down from the heavens and puts you where you need to be. This place may not be where you want to be, or may not be where you thought you would end up, but it is definitely where you need to be. The good thing about Eclipses is that generally you can trust the direction they are guiding you in. Eclipses bring about almost fated events that are part of the cosmic plan and written just for you. – Tanaaz

“I want to pay more than lip service to things like non-harming, contentment, inclusion, and peace. Even more so, I want to really be clear on the things I see get really obfuscated (looking squarely at my colleagues rn tbh): autonomy, personal agency, consent, and agency. This goes beyond “memorizing the sequence” and requires looking at our speech, beliefs and presentation.

I think things like personal agency and autonomy are often being limited by action if not word. I’ve seen authoritarianism and group-think arise in spaces, often the end result being spaces that present an exclusivity. There are ways around this trap, but it requires confronting the issues head on. ”

Have you ever seen a full moon rise over a pyramid? It left me with a sense of wonder and awe.

This is from Mexico in 2019, before my world imploded. Before my parents moved to this very neighborhood in the jungle. Before my brother and sister in law died in that jungle, killed neither by the jungle nor COVID. It’s hard to imagine a time when my trip to Mexico’s biggest stressor was dodging that very same brothers phone call. If you had asked, I would have told you that I had nothing more to say to him until he apologized. That was very not true. I keep thinking I know what it means to have had a human experience, and then my mind gets blown by natural wonder and the human experience. Yes, even the depths of tragedy can inspire awe.

At my weakest, I would sing:
I will push myself up through the dirt,
And shake my petals free,
I’m resolved to being born again,
And so resigned to bravery.

🌿 I saw first hand our capacity to change the world when I travelled to the cloud forest regeneration project @suenodevida_ecu in 2019. The Patreon helps me keep tabs on their hard work. The latest one inspired my latest blog post.

Merging the wisdom of my mentor, Kristen Krash, with my journey as a Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga teacher. Kristen’s remarkable work in regenerating Ecuador’s cloud forests teaches us about the deep interconnectedness of life.

🌳 KK’s article, ‘Why those big-tree planting projects fail. And why ours is succeeding,’ is not just about trees, but about resilience, regeneration, and community.

🧘‍♂️💚 In it, I find striking parallels to the nurturing environment of our Mysore yoga community. Just as a forest is more than its trees, our growth is about more than just individual practices. It’s about how we thrive together. Let’s explore these insights and grow, collectively.

in image4 years since the WHO declared COVID-19 a
pandemic. Many of us never dropped our shoulders
after that. Some of us literally can't breathe the same.
COVID was not the great equalizer we naively hoped,
but it was an event of mass clarity. Changed how we
saw people and government. There are friends and
family I still don't talk to, not after I witnessed risks
and privileges so different from mine. Did I overreact?
The official death toll is 7 million, but related deaths
are immeasurably higher. Is 4 years enough to mourn?
When will I get over streaming my grandmother's
funeral on a shitty signal on Facebook Live?
COVID fractured our version of reality. How could
some of us believe in a disease and others not? See
masks and vaccinations so differently? And how do
we consider millions dead and disabled but
also...good things? How many origin stories start with
"during the pandemic, I..started my business, learned
to (blank), got pregnant, got this dog, fell in love."
COVID changed our center of gravity by 6 feet, forced
us to cross the Rubicon. What parts of us stayed in
that lockdown, and what parts were set free?

Picture this: I’m Michael Joel Hall, not just a yogi but a story in motion. There’s an exciting new chapter unfolding - and so I thought I’d take a pause to reintroduce myself. Big main character energy there, I get it. But the algo demands!

A lot of you started following me because of your experience with me as a yoga instructor. Well, that plot continues to play out with the launch of @ashtanga.tech.

Ashtanga Tech is where our yoga dialogue takes a deeper, more engaging turn. If you’re all about immersing in yoga insights and discussions, follow me there.

A little gift for you: use LAUNCH30 at http://ashtanga.tech for an exclusive 30% off on memberships.

I’m still steering @theyoga.club in Yoga Circle, where I teach yoga one-on-one in either group or private settings. And while I’ll still be around here, sharing and connecting, the elearning platform I’ve built is WILD and i can’t wait for the ashtangis to play with it.

bully alone, even if I can trace Nex's death to him
too. I'll even forgive the 3 children in that bathroom
who just ruined their lives. I don't have time for
them today. I'd rather remember my other teacher.
The "bachelor" who read us poetry. Who, thinking
he was alone in the classroom one day, got into a
sweet argument on the phone with his "roommate"
about what couch to buy. How he whispered "We
can talk about it when I get home?" Who pulled me
aside atter my grandfather died to say "Crying is
not a weakness.'
Nex's death sits in our tummy next to memories of
child violence. Maybe this will spark some change.
America needs sweet-faced sacrificial lambs to
care about Queers. Ask Matthew Shepard's ghost.
As we struggle through rage and numbness,
remember a teacher who helped you survive.
Thank them in your mind.
War should make us grateful as well as angry.

in imageI keep thinking of Nex Benedict stumbling out of
that bathroom. Every Queer knows why the school
didn't call an ambulance or the cops. How fast
would the cavalry be if the blonde homecoming
queen got jumped 3 to 1?
We can trace this to anti-Trans laws and
the
damaged b-tch over at Libs of TikTok, to "the
rhetoric"...but these deaths are so much older. Our
school system has rarely been "safe" for Queers. I
was Nex's age when my bully outed me in front of
the entire class. "He's a f-ggot and we all know it."
My teacher just stood there and shrugged like it
was my fault. Now I have to act shocked and
outraged, call this a "wakeup call" so more straight
people give a sh-t. What I am is numb. Another
one. Another reminder that Queer culture was
built on concussions.

all its torms, yogasana (postural practice),
devotion, and Buddhism—it's all yoga. So, it's
offered differently than a yoga retreat as it's not
really a vacation in the traditional sense of
"getting away from it all", but rather an experience
that is cultivated to challenge us on various levels
that are highly dependent on each individuals life
experience. I've seen it serve as such a positive
force for growth and transformation in the lives of
those who join us and that energizes me to
continue the work.

in imageHere's this man, for example, that most people remember by what
is a very poetic " Have a Dream" speech, but not by the deep,
penetrating social and political analysis he had about
imperialism. And why? Because, in a sense, we censor that
Martin Luther King. Even, like, a Martin Luther King holiday is
constructed to make him more palatable.

in imageThe reason that the plural of goose is
geese but the plural of moose is not

It’s amazing to see so many of you guys using it already, and I’m just so over the moon. Can’t wait to see you in homeroom.

1. Understanding Body Scan Meditation: Learn how this practice helps in acknowledging and releasing stored tensions. It's a key tool for developing deeper awareness of your physical self.
2. Finding the Right Spot: Lie down in a quiet, comfortable place. Allow your body to feel supported by the ground beneath you.
3. Start at Your Toes: Begin with focusing on your toes. Observe any sensations, warmth, tingling, or maybe nothing at all.

Now my feeling is that our hope lies in reality
because the culture of empire - the capitalist,
hedonistic patriarchal culture is driven by fantasy -
an addiction to fantasy. To the extent that we can
encourage and promote facing realty we have
concrete reasons to hope.

in imagelarugayoga I will tell you, after years of doing Bhekāsana, I never feel like I get the chest high enough, hahaha.
.
But with that said, is it wrong to strive for it? Why not? As I reach for growth in any pursuit, I might miss, and I might fail, but at least I strive for something beyond what I am capable of in this moment. It's not for everybody, and that's okay. As long as there is grace and acceptance for where I am now, I can still reach for the stars. ✨ ✨ ✨
