During Shavasana, the tears flowed. That’s not a problem with your practice — that is your practice. Shavasana holds power in its stillness. When you’re moving through postures, your body and mind are occupied. Lying down removes those distractions and lays bare whatever you’re carrying. Crying on the mat is bearing witness. Your body has been waiting for you to stop, to allow for rest. Shavasana may have been the first time you gave it that chance. ☯️ Permission to Grieve and Move Forward If Shavasana feels too overwhelming, it’s okay to skip it occasionally. The first rule is do no harm. The yoga mat is one of the few places where you don’t need to explain yourself — nor should you judge yourself. Communicate with your teacher if necessary. Your journey on the mat is deeply personal, and sometimes laying still and letting emotions flow is the whole point. Going back to practice after a week? That says something about you. A lot of people wouldn’t. Don’t rush. You’ve got time. 🌟 Transforming Physical and Emotional Landscapes Another question explores yoga’s impact on intimacy. The physical stuff is obvious — stamina improves, you’re stronger, more flexible in every sense. Ujjayi breathing coordinates your nervous system. You learn to down-regulate on demand, and that means you’re actually present with your partner instead of stuck in your head. But the bigger shift is subtler. Ashtanga trains you to stay present with intense sensation without reacting to it. To breathe through discomfort. To notice what’s happening in your body without narrating it. These are transferable skills. When you stop bracing against your own body, everything changes — including intimacy. ⚖️ Beyond Aesthetic Goals Can yoga tone your body? Sure. Ashtanga will absolutely change your body composition — you’re holding your own weight in ways that build lean, functional muscle. Sun salutations are progressions of a push-up. Your arms, core, and legs will all get worked. But here’s the thing. Once you start practicing, you’ll probably notice something shift. You stop caring as much about what your body looks like and start caring about what it can do. Santosha — contentment — changes how you show up in every physical relationship. Self-love looks good on everyone. ✨ The Side Effects Are the Point Start with what hurts — anxiety, back pain, whatever brought you here. I’ve been saying this for a long time now, but in order to truly see the bigger picture, we must embrace systems thinking. Holistic change in the yoga isn’t about isolated fixes; it’s about viewing the entire community as an interconnected ecosystem. Every element within yoga, and i mean every—teachers, students, landlords, and the economy—is interconnected. Challenges like low wages, high rents, and the devaluing of vocational education aren’t isolated; they’re symptoms of larger, interconnected issues— systemic issues. As owners, operators and professioanls, we have a chance to innovate and strengthen the entire ecosystem by addressing root causes, creating multiple streams of value, and fostering deeper community engagement, Let’s move beyond fragmented fixes to lasting change.

When I started practicing in 2002, there wasnt a yoga studio on every corner. Yoga hadn’t quite hit the granola standard yet (when its not just for hippies anymore). Practice in general was still counterculture, with lineage-based yoga studios having been established for a decade or two. It wasnt yet seen from a consumerist athleisure lens.
This was at a time when traditional yoga studios had begun to propagate naturally into smaller studios from their spry, allowing 30-something teachers to enter full time teaching, inside their own four walls. It was a time before the big boxes, the local chains, and venture capital from Wall Street. Yes, at one time, independent yoga studios were owned by people who had made exotic journeys and devoted insane amounts of time to their spiritual quests amd studies.

Shifting into training and out of rehab on the @vitruvian is wild. I used the trainer for about 2 years while rehab after getting hit by that pesky car. When I got it for the studio, i knew at least one person would use it— and id have no excuse to not stay on top of my PT.

Prana and the Bathtub: Systems Thinking for the Ashtanga Practitioner

In our practice, we’re not just trying to keep the tub full. We’re learning to live in balance, where the ebb and flow of prana supports us as much as we support it. It’s not about avoiding leaks but recognizing that the small, subtle drains often compound our stress more than a single big crisis. The practice guides us in patching those leaks with awareness, restoring a harmonious flow where life feels less like a constant emergency and more like a nurturing partnership In our practice, we’re not just trying to keep the tub full. We’re learning to live in balance, where the ebb and flow of prana supports us as much as we support it. It’s not about avoiding leaks but recognizing that the small, subtle drains often compound our stress more than a single big crisis. The practice guides us in patching those leaks with awareness, restoring a harmonious flow where life feels less like a constant emergency and more like a nurturing partnership. The goal isn’t to always be on alert, like the little Dutch boy at the dam. Instead, we want to be more like the Indigenous stewards of land and water—understanding that the flow is only a problem when it’s out of balance. Otherwise, it’s a beautiful exchange, where prana nourishes us as much as we nourish it. This isn’t crisis management; it’s living in relationship.
