Embracing Fear: The True Meaning of Courage

Courage isn't about being fearless. It's about standing firm when fear tries to push you down. It's about surviving when the world seems determined to break you. There are forces out there that are trying to hold you down. You can push back. Oppression thrives on silence. It feeds on exhaustion. But even in the darkest moments, even when everything feels stacked against you, resilience is an act of defiance. Like the strongest oak, you don't grow because you're protected from the storm—you survive despite it. You stand, you endure, and in doing so, you claim your power. Most people look for an easy way out. But for those who have no choice but to fight, survival is bravery. And every day you keep going, you prove that fear doesn't get the last word. So hold your ground. Your existence, your persistence, your refusal to disappear—it all matters. And that is courage.

Any suitably complex system falls apart— and I love my body and have enough self-respect to push against entropy.

It’s quite radical to work from a place of self-love as opposed to seeking outside validation.

When we let our yoga practice do its work, the process nourishes our “mind body organism. ” Thats what my teacher called it, and I reckon an ever abiding kind of self love we’re building. And if theres only one of us here, its good practice, that self love. Because it defies entropy.

I’ve often had other yoga colleagues wonder how I made it so so far in Ashtanga yoga. They say it with a laugh, and knowing wink. The truth is that deep inside we’re all zebras in a room full of horses. I like to think that I’m a unicorn in a room full of zebras. But I know its all just drag. There’s only one of us here anyway. What I think my colleauges really mean is “you look like you’re having a lot of fun with this identity.” I get where they’re coming from— you’re not supposed to overly identify with this experience. Sometimes I think they just can’t fathom that you might have fun with a constructed identity and be able to let go of it. Ask any drag queen the second best part of getting into drag. Getting out of it. It’s the paradox between “be yourself because everyone else’s taken” and “ life is too important to be taken seriously. ”

Over the years, I have found myself at the intersection of personal expectations, teacher guidance, and the inevitable boundaries of my own body. The process has been as much about internal growth as it has been about mastering the physical postures. In Ashtanga, this challenge is heightened by the structured progression through the series, where each new posture represents both an achievement and a new set of demands. “I will not be cracking. Thanks so […]

Uncomplicate Prasarita Padottanasana A-D

This is the most confusing count most folks run into, bar none. The series of poses known as Prasarita Padottanasana A-D, also known as the Spread Feet Intense Stretch Pose, are also a great entryway to researching how we distribute weight, how we establish foundation, and how we draw the energy into the central channel of the body.

It’s not a bad shape. But its not a classic chatturanga. Doesn’t mean it’s not great prep for something else, or beneficial in its own right. Binaries are for shallow thinkers.

In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you. - Deepak Chopra

This quote resonates deeply with my journey through Ashtanga Yoga. As I practice the Tristhana method, I find that focusing on my asanas, ujjayi pranayama, and drishti helps me cultivate a sense of inner calm amid life's challenges. These core elements guide me back to my center, allowing me to connect more profoundly with my breath and body. It's a beautiful reminder that within the flow of movement, I can discover stillness and clarity.
