Understanding how our bodies adapt to specific physical demands can significantly enhance our practice. This is where the SAID principle, or Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demand, becomes invaluable. The principle posits that the body adapts specifically to the types of stress it encounters. For Ashtanga Yoga practitioners, integrating strength training exercises like pulldowns can lead to remarkable improvements in asana practice, particularly in poses that require strong and stable latissimus dorsi muscles.

Enjoyment as a Discipline:

Hey y’all, it’s Michael here, bringing you some backbending inspiration from my workroom. My biggest tip? Stop making yourself miserable.

Incorporating enjoyment and gratitude into the discipline of yoga practice is in itself a transformative act. It shifts the focus from viewing practice as a duty or challenge to seeing it as a cherished part of daily life. This shift in perspective can significantly enhance a practitioner’s dedication and enthusiasm, making the practice more sustainable and enriching.

Commit to knocking the sh*t*y self talk off. Enjoyment is part of the process— be disciplined about its curation!

Here’s some stuff that made me stop and feel.

I save a lot of things that make me laugh, think, and cry. Here are a few of them. I have to get them off this phone! Im hacking my old Wii U for fun, and I’m out of memory for games and I just can’t add any more to my iCloud in good conscience.

I’m inspired by @gayunclemario2 — he’s always posting fire memes— but also because I saw this one episode of Geraldo when I was a kid with a bunch of club kid freaks. I was maybe 14-15? I kinda knew I was one of them, but didn’t know really what that meant… to be honest, i now know it just meant that I was gonna make bold outfits, listen to Madonna remixes and teach yoga — all while trying to help other people find freedom from this ridiculous trap we call society. Mario was on that episode (or maybe it’s all a fever dream now).

Ashtanga at Any Age: Inspiration from Alma Thomas and Cognitive Improvement Research

This week, my reflections are deeply anchored by my decade-long journey with a dedicated student, Ron. As our sessions evolved from power-packed vinyasa to the disciplined practice of Mysore, an intriguing question bubbled up: Why do older adults, like Ron, gravitate towards yoga? While the physical transformations are palpable, it's the cognitive rejuvenation that's turning heads. Delving into the tales of Alma Thomas, a late-blooming artist, and recent research from the University of Illinois, we uncover yoga's holistic gift — a dance of physical mastery and cognitive bloom. For every Ron seeking a deeper ‘why’ in their practice, this exploration promises insights into the boundless potential of age and the brain's synergy with yoga.

So much "can't erase history" stuff, and l am gonna take it on face value
that y'all don't really understand ( a VERY charitable read rn).
Lemmie break this down for ya:
Say you came over and put a statue up in my front yard-- one that was
in the image of the men who have verbally and physically assaulted me
over the years. How do you think it would make me feel?
Now, lets make it spicy: that statue, lets say it was built to highlighting
the virtuousness of the men who harassed, hospitalized, and hurt me?
Do you think I'd wanna come home? Do you think I'd wanna be
anywhere near it?
Would you like to see the face of your tormenters every day comin' and
goin? "History is history" really feels like "suffer, bitch."

Something I shared on the panel tonight: "In my experience,
the stereotypes of being gay - the permission for extroverted
flamboyance and extraness - cancel out the stereotypes of
being Asian - being introverted, passive and meek. Similarly
the stereotypes of being Asian - being hardworking and
focused - cancel out the other stereotypes of being gay -
being flippant and insubstantial. Whereas Asians are
perceived as the workhorse, never the show horse, the
gaysian can be both. When I was just Asian I was invisible.
But when I was both proudly gay and Asian, I compelled
them to never ignore me."
Apparently this resonated with some people :

Balancing with the Equinox (that's on the 20th!!)—⁣

The myth is that you can balance an egg on its end on the equinox-- but what about a person on one leg?⁣

This chimera of a posture is a combination of good ol’ tree pose and uthitha hasta padangusthasana.⁣

Use it to develop and research:⁣

-active mobility: try not to use your hand to put the foot into place. ⁣
-balance: watch how you have to micro adjust while changing leg positions.⁣
-irradiation: use anjali mudra to create and keep useful tension/tensile integrity in the body. ⁣

The posture facilitates neuromuscular development, end range of motion strength, and of course heightens proprioceprion. ⁣

Learn more about the Equinox in the @dcashtanga Newsletter, or come to class with @michaeljoelhall and give it a try!

I hear stories of this guy named Derick Ireland. He passed away a few years ago, but taught on the beaches of Goa and Greece. He wasn’t so much, on the surface, into the “spiritual” side of things. He wore ankle weights, practiced in less than a speedo, and sold a valid practice off the back of his own gorgeous aesthetic.  I’m told that Guruji had him bind his arms as you might see in an american flow style class. I imagine it was to accommodate his big ol’ biceps.
Funny, that. Remarkably, his legacy is such that he is remembered as a pioneer. He inspired practice in people who are now certified, and have legacies all their own. The John Scotts, The Petri’s, they all met a man who helped spark passion and practice.

Anyway. Bind your arm or leave your palm up. You do you.

Four (almost five now) years ago My father gave me three elephants.
I left one at the Ashtanga Yoga Center amongst a parade of kin. Under a chart of postures-- just aside of books, stacked akimbo. They were for my teachers, David and Keith.
I thought them very special.
Unsure of what to do with this diminutive glass menagerie, I gave one to my best friend, Michael. "Why should I have both," I thought.
I hear that elephants mate for life.
Leaving has never been so hard. I took this photo on the alter @mroike made for us.
