Laundry Tips for Sweaty Yogis

We’ve all been there – after an invigorating yoga session, you feel rejuvenated and centered, but your yoga clothes? Not so much. The lingering odors can be a real challenge. I should know— I’m a stinky boy.

So, what are we supposed to do? Well, I asked some of our fellow practitioners (and my Mom!) for some of their best tips. Fear not, fellow yogis, because we’ve got your back! In this article, we’re diving into the world of banishing those stubborn smells from your beloved yoga attire. Say goodbye to unwanted odors and hello to a fresh, clean practice every time.

Prevention is Key:

This might be the most important… and the hardest. One of the best ways to keep your yoga clothes smelling fresh is to prevent odors from setting in. After your practice, avoid tossing your sweaty gear into a pile. Instead, hang them up to air out before tossing them in the laundry basket. This simple step can go a long way in preventing that dreaded post-yoga funk.

Choose the Right Detergent:

When it’s laundry time, opt for a high-quality sports detergent. These detergents are specially formulated to break down sweat and oils that can trap odors in your fabrics. Look for one that’s free from heavy fragrances and harsh chemicals to ensure your clothes are truly clean and fresh. We use Ecos at the yoga studio.

Harness the Power of Activated Charcoal:

Consider adding activated charcoal to your laundry routine. This powerful and environmentally-friendly ingredient works wonders in absorbing unwanted smells, leaving your activewear refreshed and ready for your next practice. Simply toss a charcoal packet or a few pieces of activated charcoal into your laundry load along with your detergent. It’s a small addition that can make a big difference in keeping your yoga clothes smelling clean and odor-free. Embrace the magic of activated charcoal and elevate your yoga experience to a whole new level of freshness.

Separate Your Gear:

It might be tempting to toss all your laundry together, but separating your yoga clothes from your regular clothes can make a big difference. Mixing sweaty activewear with regular laundry can transfer odors, so keep those yoga clothes in a separate load.

A little help goes a long way

Vinegar Soak:

A natural and effective method for banishing odors is to give your yoga clothes a vinegar soak before washing. Fill a basin or sink with water and add about a cup of white vinegar. Let your clothes soak for about 15-30 minutes before washing them as usual. Vinegar helps break down odors and can leave your clothes smelling fresh.

Sunlight Magic:

Mother Nature has a powerful tool for eliminating odors – sunlight! After washing your yoga clothes, hang them outside to dry in the sun. Sunlight not only helps kill bacteria that can cause odors, but it also imparts a natural freshness to your clothes.

Baking Soda Boost:

Baking soda is a tried-and-true odor eliminator. Add half a cup of baking soda to your laundry load along with your regular detergent. This can help neutralize odors and leave your clothes smelling clean.

So, roll out your mat, dive into your practice, and revel in the joy of knowing that your yoga clothes will be as refreshed as your spirit.
