Or: Meditations on patience, persistence, and the exquisite and essential internal form. ⁣

Sometimes, it feels that there isn’t enough— that I’m not enough. That none of its enough. The evidence, right there!, says there isn’t enough. ⁣

A gap to great. Not enough. Not enough. ⁣

But I know there is an infinite well spring. I know that the answer, as it always tends to be, resides inside. ⁣

Here, im slowly ramping up the connection to the internal forms that may just reveal the external forms. ⁣

Perhaps the video is a bit boring, but the physical analog to the internal work is hard to miss. ⁣

These techniques can be taught— whether it be on banana leaves, cow dung lined shalas in the jungle, or zoom— these things can be taught. ⁣

See you in class! Link in Bio.

Mister Gates done been told us, y’all.

His footnote on how preparedness also helps create a more “just” society while also keeping the economy ~3 trillion dollars stronger maybe is more than a footnote.

I have made a pivot towards online offerings— but the question becomes more existential. As someone who functions as a manual therapist *and* a facilitator/ of an indigenous practice that changes the mind and body radically... is my vocation dispensable? My life’s work?

Surely not— but we do need protecting.

And we done been known.

I worked at the improv during that impressionable 21-28 time frame. I am so grateful for that time. Night after night i got to watch masters hone their craft. Words, wit, and dynamic performance art... all at the same time. The relationships forged there— my friends, my own art, and with incredible artists... Wow. Please help if you can!

Beast Skills
Need a serious project to take your mind
off things in self isolation? Want to go
back to work able to crank out a one-
armed pull-up, or do a handstand while
teetering on a chair? Beast Skills offers up
the toughest challenges on this list, but
breaks them down into entirely
manageable progressions, theoretically
allowing you to go from never-worked-
out-indolence to your first muscle-up in
... well, however long this all takes. If you
have got something suitable to hang them
from, this might be the time to invest in a
set of gymnastics rings - it will drastically
increase your options, and might improve
your shoulder health.

Classes Cancelled? I gotchu. Livestream link via Patreon is in the bio.
Most of my schedule opened up as we as a global community work to mitigate risk of viral transmission. Like so many of you, if I don't work, I don't get paid... And as someone who loves what they do, I want to continue bringing you reports and insights from the vast did of yogic studies... And to keep reveling in your discoveries!

Over the years I've released class recordings and videos to my students. A few months ago, my dear friend and student @emerymargaret suggested I start a Patreon for students who want more of my content. After seeing my incredible colleague and mentor Kristen @suenodevida_ecu use it as a platform for sustainability education and permaculture development, I was emboldened to give the platform a go.
You'll find different tiers and a poll for what other kinds of tiers you might want. Please, sign up and let me know what you want!

Having trouble finding the next step? That’s where Ashtanga Yoga (and I) come in. ⁣

This yoga system is a lot like the game show Jeopardy— it gives you the answer first, and makes you come up with the questions. That’s why it’s brilliant, and oh-so personal. ⁣

Ashtanga Yoga gives practitioners the framework to solve little puzzles— physical, emotional, temporal. ⁣

In order for practice to work, we have to look inside for clues. They help to tease out what excellence, ethical living, and alignment truly mean to each of us as individuals. ⁣

The Mysore style gives you a collaborative partner so that you can get some assistance in finding the next step— then get support in taking it. ...with friendliness and compassion. ⁣

Then the next one. ⁣
And the one after that. ⁣

Developing a yogic mindset is life changing— it allows you to trouble shoot without crumbling, to heal without spite, and to release long held labels without giving up either quality or personal values. ⁣

Yoga Sutras 1:43-When the memory is well purified, the knowledge of the object of concentration shines alone, devoid of the distinction of name and quality. This is Nirvitarka Samadhi, or Samadhi without deliberation.

If you wanna be wonderful, you gotta remain full of wonder. ⁣

Call it what you will, and organize it however you like, but near as i can tell: the entrance to the "kingdom of heaven" is truly inside of each of us. ⁣

Heaven? It’s the experience of making harmless and honest the existence you keep. The contentment and the effort, all at the same time. The relational harmony? Nothing like it. ⁣

And Hell?⁣

It’s existence, knowing you have not made right the trespasses you have come to note in your own history. Not asking for forgiveness, knowing you should. Not making the effort to do better, and knowing you could. This consciousness of conscience let's youvohiwbwyen you're out of alignment. ⁣

Living an aligned life requires waking up, accepting, and committing to growth. The reward is great— but wow— no wonder folks want to stay asleep.

Here is an explanation or intersectional analysis as it relates to the Kobe story. I found it useful.

I don’t know anything about current athletes who aren’t gay and shirtless, so I only know of Kobe by how much he meant to a lot of people. When I saw he died, I said “oh wow.”

Later, I said, “didn’t he get accused of rape or something?”

My news feed is filled to the brim with stories of sexual assault— stories of black men, Indian men, and white men— and they are all intense and complicated and people hold these men up high on pedastels while others say to tear them down and distance themselves. I’ve taken down the smiling visage of one such Indian man.

But guys, can’t we think more deeply?

I believe churches are meant for praising
God. But so are 2am car rides, showers,
coffee shops, the gym, conversations with
friends, strangers, etc. Don't let a building
confine your faith because we will never
change the world by just going to church,
we need to be the church.

Yoga practice has an external form and an internal form. The external can show up nicely in pictures for those who take pictures nicely.
Internal forms show up relationally. They can’t be captured by a camera.
The way I see it:
-You can practice externally without practicing internally.
-You can practice internally without practicing externally. -External practice has a shorter shelf life than internal practice.
What does all of this mean?
The better long-term investment in your time is on the internal form.
So why practice externally at all? Frankly, If you can’t be alone with yourself, what are the odds that someone else will want to be in your company, either?

To get better at being better, having a practice that helps to improve your ability to be alone also helps you in your ability to be in relationship.
To be a better lover, brother, father, or community member: -learn a practice
-find some open space and practice
-get an accountability buddy -be alone, together.
If you are looking for a place to start, DM me. I teach practice one-on-one — in person and online.
Already started and need some coaching or an accountability buddy? Let me know.

Yoga practitioners can often be segmented out into categorical archetypes based on their approach to practice:
Scientist.
Artist.
Athlete.

Do you approach your yoga practice from a place of curiosity and experimentation? You might be the scientist archetype.
Do you approach it from a sense of creation, craft, and beauty? You might be the artist.
Are you concerned with jumping further, faster, and farther? You guessed it: athlete.
Regardless of where you fall in terms of approaching the shapes, some anatomical knowledge can go a long way to honing your construction.
Want to learn more? Join me on Saturday and Sunday for an applied anatomy immersion at @vidafitnessdc —- send me a DM for more info!

January brought an unseasonably warm day— and so I went into nature and rejoiced. How do you rejoice?⁣

The practice of yoga is one for carving away on the calcified dust and dirt that almost opaquely blocks the mind and spirit from their truest form of bliss absolute. ⁣

Yoga allows any practitioner an opportunity to descale their senses, like Saul cum Paul, and wake up to the interconnected nature of body, mind, and spirit. By getting at the center of the center, each aspirant can get free. ⁣

Free from the bondage of poisoned existence. The chains of oppression. ⁣

Real yoga creates a sliver of transparency to the internal forms of knowing— revealing to anyone who will look that there is only one of us inside— and from that gleam of light, and avenue towards freedom from the oppressive external and internal voices that would limit our majesty. ⁣

Then comes the real cost of admission: what do you do with this awakening?⁣

117 homeless Washingtonians have died in the last year. This is up more than 100% compared to the previous last year.

2 million dollars was spent on an art installation designed to keep homeless people out of an underpass— not for safety, but because of community aesthetics.

The building the crew club is in on 14th street sold for 2 million.

I’m all for public art commissions— but c’mon. We can hang shitty LED lights, but not help our most vulnerable at the very least stay safe from the elements?

How much housing can 2 million buy?
