Have you ever seen a full moon rise over a pyramid? It left me with a sense of wonder and awe.

This is from Mexico in 2019, before my world imploded. Before my parents moved to this very neighborhood in the jungle. Before my brother and sister in law died in that jungle, killed neither by the jungle nor COVID. It’s hard to imagine a time when my trip to Mexico’s biggest stressor was dodging that very same brothers phone call. If you had asked, I would have told you that I had nothing more to say to him until he apologized. That was very not true. I keep thinking I know what it means to have had a human experience, and then my mind gets blown by natural wonder and the human experience. Yes, even the depths of tragedy can inspire awe.

At my weakest, I would sing:
I will push myself up through the dirt,
And shake my petals free,
I’m resolved to being born again,
And so resigned to bravery.

To explore how yoga can help with grief, visit Ashtanga Tech. You’ll gain a foundational understanding of the qualities of grief and ways in which yoga may support someone who is grieving.

Ashtanga at Any Age: Inspiration from Alma Thomas and Cognitive Improvement Research

This week, my reflections are deeply anchored by my decade-long journey with a dedicated student, Ron. As our sessions evolved from power-packed vinyasa to the disciplined practice of Mysore, an intriguing question bubbled up: Why do older adults, like Ron, gravitate towards yoga? While the physical transformations are palpable, it's the cognitive rejuvenation that's turning heads. Delving into the tales of Alma Thomas, a late-blooming artist, and recent research from the University of Illinois, we uncover yoga's holistic gift — a dance of physical mastery and cognitive bloom. For every Ron seeking a deeper ‘why’ in their practice, this exploration promises insights into the boundless potential of age and the brain's synergy with yoga.

Adventures in the Arts with @judydcz -- We saw the American Ballet Company's production of Romeo & Juliet at the Kennedy Center.

Finding the energy to do the things that give us more energy can feel frustrating at times. I've been someone who had to "guard" his down-time, and I get it. But seeing performance art, catching up with friends, and generally being out in the world and in community also has a way of recharging my batteries.

It's a balance... But ultimately, the question becomes whats draining, what's sustaining, and what's nourishing.

Be a fountain, not a drain. Seek fountains.

If your engagements and responsibilities have precluded you from being in community, I want you to know I wish you well.

The pandemic has done a real number on people. Being around people who had to pretend like they were scared of going out so they didn't have to go to their domineering bosses idea of an "office" did a real number on people. Actually being scared did a real number on people. Watching loved ones die while your unemployment ran out and your business owners kept their PPP money and friends got raises and cars and houses... well, that did a real number on people. Being these people did a real number on people.

May we all heal from this collective trauma.

Cause listen... I know this is a hot take...I gotta tell ya... There's nothing quite like seeing art in person with people.

Police don't have the right to kill you
for not following their instructions or
if they believe you've broken the law.
Stop perpetuating the idea that they
do, they don't. Start valuing the lives
of human beings over police
feelings. It's a JOB, they aren't gods
amongst men

Side bending is one of the most lovely ways a spine can move.

Here’s a love letter to this humble tadasana variation.

1) I love that you are so free of frills. Your simplicity and elegance highlight how even the most minuscule of changes can impact the way things feel in a posture dramatically.

2) I love that you let me decide how much to push and how much to pull-- I just have to lean and breathe. You help to highlight the push and pull from the side of the body, but also the deep muscles inside like my transverse abdominals and disphrapgm! You help me understand the layers of stability a posture can have— and you don't make me go very far to discover what is comfortable and stable!

3) I love that you help so many kinds of backs feel so good! Little side bend, you do a world of good for folks who have rounding, swaying, or curving to the spine-- things like kyphosis, lordosis, and scoliosis.

Thanks, side-bend!

Marichyasana A, modeled with a block and a bind.

This pose has a peculiar demand: *major* ankle dorsiflexion. A requisite for this posture is strength and flexibility in the ankle such that the knee can go forward and beyond the toes so as to get the center of mass towards and beyond the center of the foundation.

This can be a struggle for some, as these deeper ankle positions were not commonly taught in yoga rooms for many years, nor was deep squatting common in gym settings.

Thankfully, that has very much changed in the last 5 years.

Finding a position that allows for controlled articulation in the ankle is key for improving controlled articulation in other places... but finding a manageable setup pays dividends that are not so easy to see here.

Forward folding and pressure onto the forehead region is associated with the relaxation response and a great way to bring a feeling of safety into your mind-body organism. Utilizing the parasympathetic nervous system (think: rest & digest), this posture is a great way to support both anatomical and physiological changes that benefit the practitioner. Don’t let this poses stress you out, in other words. Adjust the setup for maximum personal benefit.

What is pratyahara? It's the skillfulness of being with yourself-- free of a need for outside distraction. Talk about important (especially right now).

It brings with it other awesome skills: focus, resilience, and the ability to make meaningful, intentional choices that you can be confident you had a say in.

It's manageable, attainable, and opens the door for much more.

In this session, we'll work with time-tested sensorsy awareness techniques for the eyes, the ears, and the body-- and learn how to apply what we learn on and off the mat.
