January brought an unseasonably warm day— and so I went into nature and rejoiced. How do you rejoice?⁣

The practice of yoga is one for carving away on the calcified dust and dirt that almost opaquely blocks the mind and spirit from their truest form of bliss absolute. ⁣

Yoga allows any practitioner an opportunity to descale their senses, like Saul cum Paul, and wake up to the interconnected nature of body, mind, and spirit. By getting at the center of the center, each aspirant can get free. ⁣

Free from the bondage of poisoned existence. The chains of oppression. ⁣

Real yoga creates a sliver of transparency to the internal forms of knowing— revealing to anyone who will look that there is only one of us inside— and from that gleam of light, and avenue towards freedom from the oppressive external and internal voices that would limit our majesty. ⁣

Then comes the real cost of admission: what do you do with this awakening?⁣

Yoga practitioners can often be segmented out into categorical archetypes based on their approach to practice:
Scientist.
Artist.
Athlete.

Do you approach your yoga practice from a place of curiosity and experimentation? You might be the scientist archetype.
Do you approach it from a sense of creation, craft, and beauty? You might be the artist.
Are you concerned with jumping further, faster, and farther? You guessed it: athlete.
Regardless of where you fall in terms of approaching the shapes, some anatomical knowledge can go a long way to honing your construction.

Yoga practice has an external form and an internal form. The external can show up nicely in pictures for those who take pictures nicely.
Internal forms show up relationally. They can’t be captured by a camera.
The way I see it:
-You can practice externally without practicing internally.
-You can practice internally without practicing externally. -External practice has a shorter shelf life than internal practice.
What does all of this mean?
The better long-term investment in your time is on the internal form.
So why practice externally at all? Frankly, If you can’t be alone with yourself, what are the odds that someone else will want to be in your company, either?

To get better at being better, having a practice that helps to improve your ability to be alone also helps you in your ability to be in relationship.
To be a better lover, brother, father, or community member: -learn a practice
-find some open space and practice
-get an accountability buddy -be alone, together.
If you are looking for a place to start, DM me. I teach practice one-on-one — in person and online.
Already started and need some coaching or an accountability buddy? Let me know.

Having trouble finding the next step? That’s where Ashtanga Yoga (and I) come in. ⁣

This yoga system is a lot like the game show Jeopardy— it gives you the answer first, and makes you come up with the questions. That’s why it’s brilliant, and oh-so personal. ⁣

Ashtanga Yoga gives practitioners the framework to solve little puzzles— physical, emotional, temporal. ⁣

In order for practice to work, we have to look inside for clues. They help to tease out what excellence, ethical living, and alignment truly mean to each of us as individuals. ⁣

The Mysore style gives you a collaborative partner so that you can get some assistance in finding the next step— then get support in taking it. ...with friendliness and compassion. ⁣

Then the next one. ⁣
And the one after that. ⁣

Developing a yogic mindset is life changing— it allows you to trouble shoot without crumbling, to heal without spite, and to release long held labels without giving up either quality or personal values. ⁣

Yoga Sutras 1:43-When the memory is well purified, the knowledge of the object of concentration shines alone, devoid of the distinction of name and quality. This is Nirvitarka Samadhi, or Samadhi without deliberation.

Or: Meditations on patience, persistence, and the exquisite and essential internal form. ⁣

Sometimes, it feels that there isn’t enough— that I’m not enough. That none of its enough. The evidence, right there!, says there isn’t enough. ⁣

A gap to great. Not enough. Not enough. ⁣

But I know there is an infinite well spring. I know that the answer, as it always tends to be, resides inside. ⁣

Here, im slowly ramping up the connection to the internal forms that may just reveal the external forms. ⁣

Perhaps the video is a bit boring, but the physical analog to the internal work is hard to miss. ⁣

These techniques can be taught— whether it be on banana leaves, cow dung lined shalas in the jungle, or zoom— these things can be taught. ⁣

I wanna point you to my Integrative online Functional Anatomy Training Program. Link in bio.

In September, I’ll be launching a 10-month integrative online Functional Ashtanga Training. We dive *deep* into functional anatomy, contextualized yoga humanities, and a collection of the most potent pranayama and meditation practices I have discovered in my 20 years of dedicated practice. I’ve spent two years developing this program, which includes 4 functional joint assessment for each participant (so you can measure your progress), 150+ 20 minute learning videos (I’m still recording!), curated readings, and measured learning objectives (homework + quizzes). Of course, I’ll have office hours. It’s capped very, very small for this first cohort, and costs 3,000— but I’m gonna take 500 off if you sign up early. With a $500 deposit, I’ll offer a monthly payment plan for 10 months (with no upcharge— gross).

In what ways do we allow ourselves to be exploited in order to minimize further exploitation? In what ways are we complicit in systemic abuse?

Yoga practice gives you the tools to wrestle with these questions, and digest the venom, like a peacock with a cobra.

Our first Functional Ashtanga Training email goes out this Friday. Sign up in the bio if you want to learn how to integrate this practice into something meaningful.

Principles over principals, please.

How do the scientific principles of #functionalrangeconditioning meld with the moral principles of #ashtangayoga ?

Let's discover, together.

Join me for an online workshop with @mainlinemysore called “Building a Better Wheel” on august 15 (it’s gonna sell out)

...or join me for a year long online yoga immersion/intensive for integrative Ashtanga called "The Functional Ashtanga Training Program".

Together, we'll work to use solid effective principles to become our own principals.

Are you looking for support in your yoga practice?

Let me help you establish (or re-establish!) a practice to which you are committed, with tools that are science-backed, respectful of their origins, and effective.

The Functional Ashtanga Training program is an organized collection of the most potent approaches I have found after two decades of travelling the planet, seeking out the most realized teachers I could find.

I’d like to share with you what I’ve learned.

The early bird commitment incentive ($500 off!) ends 7/31.

Practicing Led Primary in a crowded room taught me
that how "advanced" an Ashtangi is has nothing to
do with what series they are on, how long they can
hold a handstand, or if they can put their feet on
their head in cortontionist poses. That's ableism.

In a tight space an "advanced" yogi will know where
their neighbors are in space and time, and be able to
work a pose like this while leaving space for others
to fumble. They'll move their mat to make room for
you for when you show up late. They'll smile at you
when you accidentally kick them. #bethatyogi

I added a few words to the translation of this poses’s name. It could be called “standing belly on thighs calm the fuck down pose,” but it’s already a mouthful. She’s the first pose of Ashtanga’s foundational series. Look gently at your nose. Calm your nerves with the standing forward bend. Chill out. Bend your knees till you feel great.

This pose is neat because it lets me use my imagination. I imagine that I am hanging from a window ledge for dear life. If I lean back and balance, I can dangle with straight arms. If I go forward and pull, I can pull with an infinite strength, so long as I meet myself *exactly* in the middle. Generally, this pose highlights where I’ve got some resistance inside keeping me from the balance. Sometimes legs, sometimes arms, sometimes belly, sometimes butt. Most often, it’s no one single thing but a concurrence of them and so the best thing to do is just try to find the middle and let things work themselves out.

Ah yes, “Try Angle” pose. Of course. The one where you try to make an angle.

Seriously: this is where you can start thinking about something called “yantras”— or sacred geometry. Its an on ramp for beauty and imagination inside of yoga practice.

Here’s how it works:

Try to visualize yourself as a collection of lines.

For example, can you visualize your bottom arm and front leg as a collection of vectors that connect and intersect?

Oh look! A triangle!

The real fun comes as you try to visualize more and more of them... at the same time. And, without looking, feel how changing one vector somewhere can change the angles elsewhere... all without losing track of your breath.

So trippy. So fun.

Come try and make an angle with me at functionalashtanga.com
