I love the days when the age range in the Shala is from 5-60. I love it when there are not enough fingers on one hand for the different races/ethnicities. I love it when there is a smattering of witches, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Athiests, and dudes who pray to Elephants.
Because of the yoga challenge, asana dominates my #bestnine2015 -- along with my authorization from #kpjayi , playing at @humblebeastcf and an engagement photo with my now former domestic partner. What I really love is a the different places the asanas are shot! #wmata - @kaliyogadc - @aysphiladelphia - @flowyogacenter
I'm the director of DC Ashtanga, an ashtanga yoga school (often called a mysore program). It's easy to talk about money when you've got it (and especially what it'd be like if ya didn't), but (like always) Ru gets its.
I've spent time this month with @[689010579:2048:Emma O'Neill], who helped sharpen my teeth in Mysore on my first trip. A major teacher for her, like Christine Hoar here, is Nancy Gilgoff.
The first 20 is essential for woman and men who associate with them. The 35 minute mark on sums up my occasional radio silence. The last 8 is for everyone.
"We are meant to be joyful beings. "
So, listen to get perspective on me or listen to get perspective on you.
Did I make it in time for #journeytohandstand ?? -- @pegmulqueen wins. I was a little jealous of your time in Kovalum with DG, @jrene01... But this is pretty fly, right? Eat your heart out #dcashtanga
Complimented this gal on her fly glasses. We'd never met. We were both surprised-- we've both been coming a while. Her: Hong Kong for a while, back to Toronto. By way of Barcelona. Me: Oh, just DC. This small community is still so huge.
For the record she thought my glasses were fly, too.
DC area Ashtangis... I'm considering a mysore pop-up shop: selling Sharath's book, rugs, hand made bags, meditation pillows, and blessed prayer scrolls. Interest?
I've been humbled and honored to share the yogic tradition as taught by Sharath Jois, the lineage of Sri K Pattahbi Jois with the #dcashtanga community... And I could not be more full of gratitude for the chance to share it with my student at the source. @livelyogini
Though I know the depths of pain, anguish, and sadness, I firmly believe in deep and abiding happiness. There is a method, and I've been going at it for some years now. In the morning, at #kaliyogadc, the #dcashtanga community comes together to make shapes with our bodies, tuning in to our relationship with gravity and time -- whilst simultaneously revealing our cravings and aversions. For this focus-challenged guy, it's intense work, but knowing where to look and how to breath makes all the difference. These precious moments of insight combined with the the heat of just staying put create the fire from which happiness arises. #b&wchallenge day 1/4. Thanks @ladyhawkzuzu for tagging me.
I just discovered that the largest church in DC, Mt Cavalry, is only a stones throw from my house in NE. Pastor Owens preaches against "sissies and faggots" from his pulpit to 7,000 members. They offer ex-gay ministries. How much of this is to blame for the assault last year? Contact the church at 202-529-4547

Other than the awesome daily mysore with the inimitable Keith Moore, Ashtanga Yoga Studio DC (AYSDC) has a fabulous fall workshop line-up. Aliya, Rex, Tova? Oh, yeah.
The lineup at EPIC DC on wednesday nights is pretty awesome for those that are classical-minded. Iyengar yoga with Kristen Krash followed by led ashtanga full primary with me. If I were gonna do a double header...
Going to the Ashtanga Yoga Center, Washington DC for what will likely be the last time. I realize my own projections of sorrow and pride, but I learned Primary in this space. Bittersweet.
Paleo One Pot Poached Egg Abergine (aka: quick paleo baba ganoush)... so good, I had to share! Can be made vegan, and is super versatile for breakfast, snack, or side! http://midcityyoga.com/?p=1357
After my big adventures this morning, I treated myself to a massage. Here's what we can learn from the science of massage. Pain, patterns, and Samskaras.
#yoga#offthemat I worked with my friend @[12302900:2048:Bryson] at the DC Improv, me honing my adulthood, him his comedy. Listening to him talk about the discipline of his art form is a reminder that one can find sadhana off a mat. Please eschew your TLDR sensibilities for this one.
In my quest to stream Richard Freeman lectures and videos, I discovered that the DC Public Library streams books and videos. How glad am I to be a member of the Library?!
Lunch with Mama Hall and Papa Hall, Rocket at Embrace Yoga DC for Dinner, Dancing with the wife. Saturday? Morning yoga with Shelby Thompson, day-play with Michael Roike. Sunday? Go back in time.

I'm so excited to invite my friends and yoga family to a new 90 minute class at one of my favorite places in the whole world. Spread the word, spread the love, spread the community!!!
Turn Friday’s afternoon toil into weekend bliss in the company of your friends, peers, colleagues, and fellow practitioners!
How does a 3,000sqft roofdeck sound? Consider yourself invited to the place that’s been home to my practice for years: Balance Gym.
Get ready for 90 minutes of prana-pulsing blissed out vinyasa with strong influences from the Ashtanga and Iyengar traditions.
Mid City Yoga was started with the idea that yoga can be done anywhere– boardroom, bedroom, shala, or studio (be it yoga or crossfit). For many folks, the gym setting can be the most unconventional space of all.
Balance is the gym at which I discovered my love for yoga. It’s the place that provided haven and encouragement for me to come to my mat more than once a week. This is the place that gave me my first teaching gig. I love it here, and you will, too!
Okay, enough shmaltz. If my love for the place doesn’t sell you on it, the roofdeck at dusk sure will. The minute it heats up, thats where we’ll be. And in the mean time (or in cases of inclement weather), we have an awesome (indoor) studio at our disposal.
The fine print:
What: Happy Hour Yoga–a vinyasa steeped heavily in Ashtanga with cues and carry-overs from Iyengar
Interested in a fun, physical practice that weaves together Ashtanga's standing series as well as postures from first, second, and third series. Come come come!
Ashtanga Yoga Center 4000 Ablemarle Street Washington, DC, 20016
Join me for a special two week series of ashtanga vinyasa inspired practice. This will be a modified ashtanga sequence for both standing and seated postures with playful exuberance and challenging twists that are at times incredibly familiar and oft-times turned on their head [har har]. Not for first-time students. Standing postures focus on leg strengthening, hip opening and balancing. Students are also introduced to inversions like handstands and forearm stands for the first time.
Ashtanga Yoga Center mission: One of our goals is to give the student, whether a beginner or advanced a home to practice Ashtanga. It is our intention to keep the teaching of Ashtanga as close to the way we have been taught.
