Guys... can we talk about words?
I've seen folks claiming that these folks actin' a fool on the capital are being sent by "Antifa. "
Word means things, and I think maybe we need to talk:
"Antifa" means Anti-Fascist-- as in, against Fascism.
Fascism is a form of far-right, authoritarian ultranationalism characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition and strong regimentation of society and of the economy which came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe.
To be Anti Fascist means to be agains totalitarian, ultranationalist government. There are many organizations that are "Anti-Fascist" but there isn't a singular "Antifa" organization.
This is comparable to "Feminist" organizations. There isn't a single Feminist Organzation. Feminism is an ideology.
To be Feminist means that you believe woman are equal to men. To be an "Feminist organization" means that you are an organization in support of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.
So, to circle this wagon: there are feminist organizations and anti-fascist organizations-- and, like those ideals, there is no central organization.
Here's what I don't get: How have we twisted the idea of being "Anti Fascist" into being a bad thing? Since when is being against a totalitarian government a bad thing?
Could it be that if you are a fascist, you want to convince people that being "anti fascist" is a bad thing?

Over threw last few years, I've managed to miss "Resolution Season," since I'd have been on my yearly practice and reflection sabbatical. As a teacher returning home from sabbatical in March, I would often be filled to the brim with inspiration to share-- and in front of a new audience! The reporte required -- including the desire to find a common nomenclature-- were the building blocks of a working relationship in March... but I think they work in January, too!
Check out some of my tips and tools for understanding Why Yoga Works, and how to help those seeking a resolute resolutions find value in your offergings!

In September, Iâll be launching a 10-month integrative online Functional Ashtanga Training. We dive *deep* into functional anatomy, contextualized yoga humanities, and a collection of the most potent pranayama and meditation practices I have discovered in my 20 years of dedicated practice. Iâve spent two years developing this program, which includes 4 functional joint assessment for each participant (so you can measure your progress), 150+ 20 minute learning videos (Iâm still recording!), curated readings, and measured learning objectives (homework + quizzes). Of course, Iâll have office hours. Itâs capped very, very small for this first cohort, and costs 3,000â but Iâm gonna take 500 off if you sign up early. With a $500 deposit, Iâll offer a monthly payment plan for 10 months (with no upchargeâ gross).

First, a thank you to Teaism. We love you.
Second, an admonishment to Brasserie Beckâ The tone deafness of BB makes me wonder about the employment demographics of upper management at RWâs restaurant group. How white? How male? If you feel like you have to a apologize to your guests for being exposed to the outcry of a community who had just seen a member murdered, and not to the community for their pain.... your priorities look very clear.

Susan Sloane interviews strong woman in leadership --and beautifully captures the conversation. Her book, "A Seat at the Table," where you can find this wonderful collection, was just released.
This is the start of an excerpt series:
"Looking at this past year, I am fortunate that I embarked on a journey to write the stories of these women and share why gender-diversified leadership is imperative for our world. It is a happy birthday, indeed. And while there will be no party in this quarantine, Iâll cry if I want to. Happy tearsâfor the goodness in humanity shall prevail."

A PSA to digital content consumers and new creators: Please consider paying/charging for online content
All out-bound yoga teachers in Washington, D.C. are out of work until at least April. There will be no compensation. Most of us pay at least our own health insurance, rent, and phone bill.
For most, these are recurring monthly expense in excess of $1500, required for survivalâ and not including food.
Itâs been a tough go of things in my industry: this is the second time i am have been forcibly removed from the workforce (without reimbursement!) due to my status as a contract employee in 15 months. My job is to provide meditation and mindfulness training and classes as a wellness service to different federal agencies, non-profits, and endowments â there is no unemployment for the self employeed.
When I was out of work last year for the government furlough, there was no âback payââ just a sharp decrease in my pay for the 35 days the government shut down. As I said, unemployment doesnât cover contractors. With stocks plummeting and 401ks evaporating, many of us who âresponsible savedâ are watching our safety net shrink at exactly the time we shouldnât be touching it.
YOU CAN HELP!
The pivot to online training for your favorite wellness provider is not a hobbiest pivotâ itâs essential. Please consider reaching out to your favorite in-person provider and supporting them financially, digitally.
Iâve included my Patreon here:
https://www.patreon.com/yogawithmjh
To all of your who have already pledgedâ thank you! Iâm looking forward to sharing content with each of you. For the cost of one boutique fitness class, you can have access to all of the contentâ and for $10, you can get access to once class. Iâd sure love it if you wanted access to all of it 🙂

The District had its highest number of reported hate crimes last year: 204. Thatâs a year of gay men being beaten, black girls being threatened, transgender women being hurt, synagogues being harassed, Muslims being taunted and a Trump supporter smacked in a restaurant.
Liu, speaking at a forum at the Justice Department last month on combating anti-Semitism, said that sometimes, the odds of conviction are better when they donât press a hate-crime charge.
But that ignores what hate crimes do to the people who experience them. And it doesnât make vulnerable people feel like anyoneâs got their backs.
Eleanor Holmes Norton: âAs you may know, the number of reported hate crimes in the District of Columbia almost doubled between 2016 and 2018. Many of these crimes were targeted at the LGBTQ community, especially transgender individuals. At a recent well-attended community forum, I learned that this community feels it is under siege. I agree,â she wrote. âAs you are well aware, it takes only a few prosecutions to create a deterrent effect.â

Has he been to Maggie's house? Her pantry is labeled. I recently found a shoe in my fridge. Tell me which is Order and which is Chaos.
...
For example, he sees the world as fundamentally divided between the forces of âchaosâ and the forces of âorder,â and explains the difference:
...
[Chaos is] what extends, eternally and without limit, beyond the boundaries of all states, all ideas, and all disciplines⦠Itâs the foreigner, the stranger, the member of another gang, the rustle in the bushes⦠the hidden anger of your mother⦠Chaos is symbolically associated with the feminine⦠Order, by contrast, is explored territory. Thatâs the hundreds-of-millions-of-years-old hierarchy of place, position, and authority. Thatâs the structure of society. Itâs the structure provided by biology, tooâ¦Itâs the flag of the nation⦠Itâs the greatness of tradition, the rows of desks in the school classroom, the trains that leave on time⦠In the domain of order, things behave as God intended.
...
Itâs very easy to hear the echoes of authoritarianism, even fascism, in this: strong men create order, which is what God intends, and the social structure is preserved by deference to authority, tradition, hierarchy, flags. (Heck, he even talks about the trains running on time!) But the moment one tries to critique this, to talk about the dangers of adhering to flags and traditions for their own sake, Peterson will angrily insist that you have misunderstood his theory: order is symbiotic with chaos, not superior to it! (âOrder is not enough.â)
...
Whatâs important about this kind of writing is that it can easily appear to contain useful insight, because it says many things that either are true or âfeel kind of true,â and does so in a way that makes the reader feel stupid for not really understanding. (Many of the bookâs reviews on Amazon contain sentiments like: I am not sure I understood it, but itâs absolutely brilliant.) Itâs not that itâs empty of content; in fact, itâs precisely because some of it does ring true that it is able to convince readers of its importance. Itâs certainly right that some procedures work in one situation but not another. Itâs right that good moral systems have to be able to think about the future in figuring out what to do in the present. But much of the rest is language so abstract that it cannot be proved or disproved. (The old expression âwhatâs new in it isnât true, and whatâs true isnât newâ applies here.)

Last year I appeared in federal court functioning as a symbol of potential for my asylum seeking then-boyfriend. In many countries, you can still be killed legally for being queer. He was a victim of the gang violence the article mentions-- as some of you may recall, when I was a victim of this kind of violence, we called it a hate crime. In Russia, there is no crime. I have never been more patriotic than in the moment his asylum was granted. I am gutted to hear that our attorney general is going to leave my marginalized brothers and sisters to die at the hands of their community or country.

Me? Last called a [redacted]: thanksgiving morning, out walking the dog. Responding promptly, ðTold the guy to get his ass over here so ðcould stuff it like a turkey. A follow up/ companion piece to the article on gay loneliness. This rings true to this reader-- but I'm left with a curious quarrel-- does it all boil down to privledged folks using privledge to get ahead and feeling the sting of its effects?:
"In the community, we have a name for these people: âA-gays." They enforce the social rules of a certain kind of urban gay space, implicitly or sometimes explicitly excluding other types of gays (and almost all queer people) who donât fit their strange standards. They are the donors and board members of the big gay nonprofits, the setters of the mainstream gay agenda.
Crucial to understanding the A-gays is seeing their cultural and economic complicity in the systems that both benefit them and, ironically, make them feel miserable. Please do not misunderstand: No one is responsible for suicide or mental illnessâthese are both complex phenomena that deserve to be addressed regardless of whoâs experiencing them. But part of taking a problem seriously is understanding where it comes from. If Iâm rolling my eyes at Hobbesâ piece, itâs not for lack of sympathy; itâs just the same way I might roll my eyes at an article about miserable hedge fund managers that didn't interrogate their exploitative profession and the way it might contribute both to their sadness and their privilege."

"Meanwhile, Trump has already sought to leverage the office of the presidency to pressure foreign governments to take actions that would improve his bottom line. Trump admitted that he asked a group of British politicians to kill a proposed wind farm he believed would mar the views at a golf course he owns in Scotland. He reportedly asked the president of Argentina to approve permits for a high-rise in Buenos Aires. (Trump denied the allegation, although his local partner announced the project was moving forward the next day.) Trump has also had his daughter Ivanka, who is supposedly managing his day-to-day business interests, sit in on meetings with heads of state.
Eisen views the current situation as dire. If Trump is permitted to be sworn in as president without selling his companies, he says, the country is facing a âwholesale oligarchic kleptocracy of a kind that we have never seen before in our history.â"

Oh, yes. So much to be grateful for this year, and with any luck and some practice, many more years of abundance. See you on the mat.

My cousin @[5005835:2048:Mara Iocolano], who knows me quite well, sent this with a note saying "If you had a lawn, this is how you'd mow it." She's right... Oh man.

I've been doing a lot of educational reading.
Yoga, yoga, yoga.
The topic of Batman managed to leach a few hours from me. Here is a round up/summary of whats been happening in the bat books over the past year.
I'm hoping Dick Grayson ends up as Bats, but thats just me.

Delightful.
So, for now the plan is:
a) Meet Man
b) Fall in Love
c) Drive to VT, IA, or MA and get hitched
d) Come back to DC
I gotta get to work.

I've had my eye on Clocky since '04-ish. Mark and I loved her. I'm thinking about the Sonic Boom.

A fly on the wall while I'm home alone would find me madder than a hatter.
That said, the service industry lends itself to a few unique perspectives in regards to human behavior. That is, bullshit better left at home.
Leave your gum in your mouth. Wrap it nicely when you're done. Throw it in the proper recipetical. Do *NOT* stick it under a chair/table, as this makes you an ass.
Just like rearranging the sugar

Where Da Gold At?!
Geoffrey and I went down to the Dubliner, DC's oldest Irish bar/ restaurant, for some St. Patrick's Day themed food. I was craving corned beef & cabbage, and Geoff has his mind set on Shepherd's pie.
Rocks weren't the only things shammed on this trip. After a $10 cover charge just to get in ("come back tomorrow, it'll be free," says the bouncer) to the dining room, we were seated upstairs with super drunk woman in green pantsuits (and terrible makeup), as well as their stodgey 'til crunk white male counterparts.
The people watching was the best part: my meal came out tepid at best. I sent it back to get reheated. Geoff's shepherd's pie looked great, but apparently was only good.
I knew I could do better. Shepherd's pie is made with lamb or mutton, of which I found none-- today I instead made "Cottage Pie." I cut the meat down to a pound and threw in some yummy extra yellow onion and lots o' garlic.
G'luck, and Happy St. Fattrick's Day!

14th Street's getting a new coffee house, just above the not-quite-recently relocated Miss Pixies @ 1626 14th.
For those that don't know, I spent a good chunk of my early DC life as a barista/cocktail server at the Dupont South Cosi. We were the "other side of the tracks" Cosi, serving up scandal with our Double Oh! Arctic Mochas.
After becoming firmly disenchanted with my coffee options here in mid city, Daddy went out and got himself a french press and coffee grinder. Now I only grind freshly roasted beans every morning.
When I want a little treat, ACKC does a good job of filling my caffinated sweet tooth, but what about when I need to get off the couch and do some work? Where do I go?
Certainly not cruise-a-bou at 14th and Rhode Island. I'm excited!
