Different Meditations, Different Brain Changes
Over 300 participants took part in three different meditation training modules over nine months while researchers collected longitudinal MRI data. The result: practicing different forms of meditation caused different parts of the brain to undergo structural changes. Each technique produced its own distinct pattern of neuroplasticity.
This is significant because it means meditation is not one-size-fits-all at the neurological level. Focused attention meditation, compassion practices, and body-awareness techniques each strengthen different neural pathways. The study provides evidence that adults can reshape their brains through brief, concentrated meditation practice.
All forms of meditation had positive benefits for mental well-being. But the specific brain changes depended on the technique. The practice you choose shapes the brain you build.
