Scotish by birth, salesman by trade, and unlikely bard by any account— the man has a story to tell and an outfit to sell you. I should know— he sold me my favorite items to wear this past year: my collection of fruit hats.
Its true, It wasn’t his gregariousness that caught my attention so much as the shirts. Yes indeed, the fabulousness of a crisp white shirt, with cotton candy colored flamingos in replicated pattern, left my mouth agape. Sean, with more wry than whiskey, wouldn’t mind telling you thats exactly how he’d like me to leave it, either.
Sean’s sense of humor feels to me informed by curated intellect and appreciation for the absurd— the first thing he said to me when i walked into his stall at the Wednesday market last week, after “Do I know you?” was “would you like some cold Hamberders?”
His sauciness and honesty extends beyond an occasional dick joke to the changing nature of world politics, Goan-grown scandal, and the challenges queers face across the globe in general. We talked fabric shopping in Thailand, hat production in Delhi, and how to find love when youre not manning a typical shop.
Sean’s designs can be found under his label “Shoop Doop”, available online. During the Goan tourist season, he has a shop in Ashwem Beach. He also makes the market rounds—the Saturday Night Market in Arpora, the Wednesday Market in Anjuna, and even one at the new Friday market at Hilltop in Vagator called “the Goa collective.”
