A federal judge ruled the Department of Defense illegally retaliated against AI company Anthropic by labeling it a supply chain risk after Anthropic refused to let the military use its technology for mass surveillance of U.S. persons. The court found this designation violated the First Amendment, though it left open whether a company's technology use restrictions are protected speech. EFF argues the ruling highlights a larger problem: Congress has failed to enact privacy protections, leaving citizens reliant on private companies to resist government surveillance.

Teaching:
• Boundaries as practice: students learn to set clear limits on how their energy is used, just as Anthropic defined unacceptable use cases
• Retaliation for saying no: when students resist harmful patterns (overwork, pushing through injury), external pressure often increases before it relents
• Systems literacy means recognizing power dynamics: who decides how your practice serves you versus how it serves institutional expectations
• The mat as sovereignty: daily practice builds capacity to articulate and defend personal boundaries against external demands

Writing seeds:
• Essay on consent in practice: how setting boundaries with your own body (not forcing asanas, respecting injury) mirrors Anthropic's refusal to enable surveillance
• Post on practice as protected speech: the choice to practice (or not practice) certain ways is an expression of values that deserves protection from institutional pressure
• Piece on the illusion of private protection: relying on studios or teachers to safeguard your practice is like relying on companies to protect privacy—personal responsibility remains essential
• Short post connecting First Amendment retaliation to yoga culture's punishment of practitioners who refuse to perform (Instagram aesthetics, competition, guru worship)

Idea map:
• Systems literacy: understanding that your practice exists within power structures (studios, lineages, social media) that may retaliate when you set boundaries
• Embodiment as boundary-setting: the body's signals are protected speech; ignoring them to satisfy external demands is self-surveillance
• Attention economy parallel: just as Anthropic refused to let its product enable mass surveillance, practitioners must refuse to let their practice serve algorithmic or institutional goals
• Practice as method for developing agency: daily repetition builds the capacity to recognize and resist coercion, whether from government, corporations, or yoga culture
