L.M. Sacasas memorializes David Cayley, the Canadian broadcaster and interpreter of Ivan Illich who died at 81. The essay celebrates Cayley's generosity and uses his death as occasion to reflect on Illich's claim that hospitality and friendship are the ground of hope and political life, illustrated by a 12th-century letter from Hugh of St. Victor on charity that endures across journeys.

Teaching:
• Frame the shala as a hospitality practice: the mat is the table around which practitioners gather, not a venue for transactional fitness
• Counter-cue the isolated headphone practice by naming small acts of welcome students already do—holding a door, adjusting a neighbor's space, sharing a towel
• Offer a class theme on friendship as discipline: practice as a 'careful, tasteful' commitment we keep with teacher, lineage, and the bodies beside us
• Use the Hugh of St. Victor letter as a Mysore-room reading on a day when the room feels heavy or sparse

Writing seeds:
• An essay on conviviality and the Mysore room: why Illich's hospitality maps onto self-practice in shared space better than onto led classes
• A Shala Daily piece called 'Friendship Suffices' linking Ashtanga lineage transmission to the friend-to-friend chain Cayley represented
• A post on why coaching, at its best, is hospitality—opening a door rather than delivering a program
• An essay pushing back on AI-mediated yoga instruction by way of Illich: tools that destroy the table around which practice gathers

Idea map:
• Extends MJH's systems-literacy frame: friendship and hospitality as the human-scale systems that industrial tools tend to displace
• Resonates with his Illich-inflected critique of platformed yoga and algorithmic attention
• Connects practice-as-method to relational continuity—the teacher-student bond as the smallest viable convivial unit
• Adds a memorial, lineage dimension to his recurring theme that embodiment is transmitted, not downloaded
