Meditation and Panic Disorder
In a 1995 study, 22 people with diagnosed anxiety disorders completed an 8-week outpatient mindfulness meditation program. The results showed clinically and statistically significant improvements in both subjective and objective symptoms of anxiety and panic.
This study is notable because participants had formally diagnosed anxiety disorders, not just self-reported stress. The improvements were measured both by how participants felt and by clinical assessment. Mindfulness meditation was used as a physician-referred group stress reduction intervention, meaning doctors directed patients to it.
For people with clinical anxiety and panic, eight weeks of structured mindfulness practice produced real, measurable relief.
