Yoga Nidra in Veterans Hospitals
The iRest Yoga Nidra program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center was described as a huge success. The results inspired similar programs at the Miami Brooke Army Medical Center and many other Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense sites. To date, iRest Yoga Nidra programs operate in 35 VA Centers and six Department of Defense sites, serving both active duty military personnel and veterans.
Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practice done lying down. It does not require physical ability or prior yoga experience. For military populations dealing with PTSD, traumatic brain injury, chronic pain, and insomnia, this accessibility matters. The practice works through systematic relaxation and awareness, allowing practitioners to process difficult experiences without re-traumatization.
When a practice spreads to 41 military and VA sites, that is not a trend. That is institutional recognition that it works.
