The four immeasurables (loving-kindness, compassion, rejoicing, equanimity) are foundational Buddhist practices that counter the five poisons (pride, jealousy, desire-attachment, ignorance, aversion). Longchenpa recommends starting with equanimity to develop impartiality, noting that friend/foe distinctions are fictions and that all beings—including ourselves—have been both allies and enemies across lifetimes. Western practitioners often struggle with guilt and ego-driven spiritual performance rather than genuine embodiment of these qualities.

Teaching:
• Cue students to include themselves in compassion practices: the same steadiness you offer the room begins with your own breath and body
• Frame equanimity as functional balance, not indifference—steady attention to sensation without chasing comfort or fleeing discomfort
• Point out when students perform 'spiritual ego' in asana (forcing a bind to look advanced) versus embodying the practice (honest engagement with present capacity)
• Use the worm-in-mud metaphor: every organism seeks comfort and avoids pain; our practice is learning skillful means to that universal end

Writing seeds:
• Essay: 'The Imperative of Ego in Ashtanga'—how we perform practice to convince ourselves we're good yogis rather than simply practicing
• Shala Daily post: equanimity as systems thinking—friend/foe are relational categories, not fixed properties; practice reveals the feedback loops
• Piece on including yourself in metta: why Western students extend compassion outward but withhold it from their own tight hamstrings and messy minds
• Short post: Longchenpa's advice to start with equanimity maps onto learning to observe breath and sensation neutrally before layering technique

Idea map:
• Equanimity as systems literacy: recognizing that 'friend' and 'foe' are contextual, not intrinsic—relational categories shift with conditions
• Embodiment vs. performance: the ego's sneaky habit of doing practice to reinforce self-image rather than to investigate experience directly
• Attention training begins with neutrality: equanimity is the baseline capacity to observe without attachment/aversion, foundational to all other immeasurables
• Practice as method for addressing afflictive states: the four immeasurables as functional techniques, not moral imperatives
