Why it Matters: Back & Spinal Conditions
Teachers do not need to be doctors or physical therapists to keep students safe and optimize yoga practices for individual students.
But they do need to have an understanding of basic medical and anatomy terminology, and the various potential causes of pain. Why?
- In some cases, it’s advisable to refer students out for diagnosis and/or to work one-on-one before attending a group class. Teachers need enough information to know that a referral is indicated.
- In situations that can be accommodated in a group class, knowledge of the diagnosis and potential cause is necessary in order to know the contraindications and cautions.
- For teachers and students who desire, the knowledge may also inform the general practice approach and emphasis.
Important Note: Please be sure you are familiar with the considerations in When & How to Refer Students Out.
