Four Main Curve Patterns: Scoliosis

For many years, a common shorthand description of scoliosis curves was to refer to a “C” or “S” curve. However, this designation may be considered outdated among some sources. In addition, we found some variation among sources in how curves are described.
Thoracic
- Focused in the thoracic (mid-back) region
- 90% curve to the right (dextroscoliosis)
- Possible smaller counter curve in the lumbar region
Lumbar
- Focused in the lumbar or low back region
- 70% curve to the left (levoscoliosis)
- Possible smaller counter curve in the thoracic region
Thoraco–Lumbar
- Major curve in both thoracic and lumbar region
- 80% curve to the right (dextroscoliosis)
Combined / Double / S-Curve
- Main curve in the thoracic region
- 90% curve to the right (dextroscoliosis)
- Equal counter curve in the lumbar region
