Looking to practice Ashtanga in the Washington, DC area?

You’re in luck, as DC and Northern Virginia has a bounty of powerful, talented teachers… no wonder we have such an inspired (and inspiring!) community of practitioners.

The following is a list of places that you can find mysore-style ashtanga vinyasa yoga:

DC AshtangaThe Yoga Club
3423 14th Street, NW Washington
Who? Michael Joel Hall (me! kpjayi level 2 authorized)

Why? A beautiful space, a lovely community. And –well– me. My approach is direct, collaborative, and encourages systems thinking and autonomy. Decidedly non-dogmatic, more interested in the pros and cons of approaches rather than the rights and wrongs. We do a good job. You’ll have to excuse me, as I’m biased, so we get to come first on the list. Look us up at dcashtanga.com or visit us at theyoga.club

Woodly Park Yoga
2625 Connecticut Avenue Northwest

Who? Faith Scimecca (authorized).

Why? Faith runs a strong and steady program in the Woodly Park neighbourhood. She is a devoted student of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and spends several months each year living and practicing Ashtanga Yoga at the KPJAYI with Sharath.

Bluebird Sky Yoga

Who? Janet Walkoe

Why? Janet’s really lovely. A professor, a friend, and a generally nice lady.

Ashtanga Arlington @ Sun and Moon
3811 Lee Highway, Arlington, VA 22207

[No Longer Teaching]

Who? Tova Steiner (authorized)

Why? A daily practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga since 2003, Tova teaches from a place of compassion that is supportive and safe. The community at Ashtanga Arlington warms my heart. Tova will warm yours, too. True to the system as it continues to be taught at the KPJAYI, Tova returns as often as possible to study with Sharath Jois.

Ashtanga DispatchFlow Yoga Center

[No Longer Teaching]

1450 P Street Northwest Washington, DC 20005-2048

Who? Jen Rene and Peg Mulqueen (Sundays)

Why? The room is vibrant. Jen is a long time student of Tim Miller’s and knows her stuff up and down. Peg is a student of David Garrigues, and teaches in an accessible yet powerful manner. Though not reguarly teaching Mysore, Gail Harris’s Saturday morning led primary is not to be missed.

Ashtanga Yoga Studio

[No Longer Teaching]
5117 MacArthur Blvd. 20016

Who? Keith Moore (authorized)

Why? This studio is all Ashtanga, all the time. This is one of the gentleman from whom I learned Primary series, and I couldn’t have more affection for the studio, the teachers, and the community.

Little River Yoga

[No Longer Teaching]

North Studio
6025 Wilson Blvd Arlington VA 22205

Who? Stair Calhoun runs the daily morning mysore program. There are morning and evening class times!

Why? This studio is chock full of Mysore and Ashtanga options.  Stair began practicing yoga in the 1970s, in a variety of schools such as Integral, Iyengar, Viniyoga, and others under many influential teachers.  In 2001 she narrowed her focus to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The program expresses the eclectic, individualised approach.
